Another Good Louisiana Breeder . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Another Good Louisiana Breeder . Many good herds of Berkshires are being established in Louisana , and as the demand for Berkshires ls extremely good from all points of the south , the Louisian Berkshire breeder has a bright future . At Dehli , La ., is the herd of Dr . Nash Collins . At the he-ad of this herd is Master Duke 106843 , a prize winning son of Baron Duke 50 th and out of a daughter of Masterpiece . Master Duke Is an excellent boar , and is siring an extremely typey lot of pigs . Dr . Collins believes in quality first , and then quantity as you can handle it . Heart to Heart Talks With Our Advertisers . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Heart to Heart Talks With Our Advertisers . How the Futurity Shows will advertise the small Breeder and Farmer . To gain a correct idea of what The Berkshire World Futurity Shows will do for the small breeder and farmer it will be necessary for us to investigate the plan of these shows as explained and illustrated on pages 20 and 21 of the November issue of The Berkshire World . The plan reduced to its simplest form is this : You nominate your boars and sows before February 1 , 1911 , and the get of the nominated boars and sows are elegible to show in the next year s shows . 3 ) fur we have had no difficulty setting most of the breeders , both small and large , to agree to nominate their boars and sows—which has not surprised us any . We believe that the only way to get the Berkshire up in the front ranks where he belongs Is to put him in the farmers hog lot . This isnt the easiest thing in the world to do , as will be seen by any person who attempts to do it . This paper will be tw...

California Coming to the Front [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

California Coming to the Front California is just awaking to the possibilities of pork production . Our state , an empire in area with an exceptionally temperate climate , has always been favorable to stock raising , but the production of hogs has heretofore been over-shadowed by cattle and sheep , since they thrive on our native wild grasses both through the wet season in winter and spring , when grasses grow luxuriantly and furnish all kinds of stock with abundant food , and through the dry summer and fall when cattle and sheep succeed while the hog although he got along in winter found it somewhat scant picking . Where some daring spirit attempted to raise swine upon anything like ambitious lines his efforts were usually rewarded by a herd that run largely to the long nosed type , which feature was possibly fostered largely by his forced chase after food . That condition of affairs is of late rapidly changing . Capital has suddenly realized that in our two immense valleys , the S...

Detroit Kerosene Engine Makes Big Hit at State Fairs . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Detroit Kerosene Engine Makes Big Hit at State Fairs . One of the most successful exhibits shown at the recent state fairs was that of the Detroit Engine Works , in which the amazing Detroit Kerosene Engine was the big feature . The powerful little engine was always surrounded by a large crowd . It was a saying at some of the fairs that Wherever you find the biggest crowd you will find the amazing Detroit Kerosene Engine . The crowds were always lined up four and five rows deep around its exhibit . A small size Detroit Kerosene Engine was shown performing eight different tasks at the same time . This little marvel was able to run a ciean separator , a barrel churn , a water pump , a wood saw , a cornsheller , a footmill , an electric light storage battery outfit and a washing machine . Instantaneous sales were made at eveiy exhibit as soon as the wise farmer had a chance to see the little giant in operation . The cost of running the kerosene wcnder is considerably less than it any o...

Berkshires at the North Carolina State Fair . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Berkshires at the North Carolina State Fair . The Berkshire exhibit at the North Carolina State Fair held premier honors in numbers , quality and enthusiasm on the part of the exhibitors . While we will grant that the State Fair is burdened with some stock not worthy of a place on the ground , we defy any breeder to come in competition with certain classes of Berkshires shown and come out of the show feeling that his showyard sportsmanship has not been rubbed in the wrong direction . The three principal exhibitors in the Berkshire classes were A . L . Swinnerton of Pinehurst , F . A . Cochrane of Derita and D . L . Farrier of Raleigh , the former two coming in warm competition on several occasions . Cochrane won four firsts and four seconds ; Swinnerton seven firsts and six seconds . G . A . Riggs of Apex won first on boar over one and under two years . The American Berkshire Association offered a Silver Cup , valued at $ 50 . 00 , for the best Breeders young herd , witli a second p...
