The timo for the meeting of tho Re publican State Convention is near at hand, and already suggestions are being made by the press or the btate concern ing it. It has been the rule heretofore of basing tho representation to the con vention upon the population of the dif ferent counties, and this custom (of al lowing two delegates to each legislative district) has been tolerated as tho sim plest method of apportionment. That it saves mathematical computatioa is tho only argument that can be urged in its favor. A convention is supposed to bo dis tinctively and emphatically in the inter ests of the party under which it is called. Its purpose is to give that party an op portunity to express its principles and select such persons from ila ranks as nominees as are presumed to be the choice of all of that political faith. This shows the wisdom of planting trees, and a the people of Kansas "change their prairie slopes into forests the more and larger acces sions of birds they will receive. The British Royal Geographical society is about to start another exploring expedition to Africa, the ostensible object ol which will be to explore the northern end of Lake Xyanza, and thence, if the funds suffice, to the southern end of Lake Tanganyika.
