The Editorial Meeting. There was a joint meeting of the press associations of Oregon and Washington at Spokane, Washing ton, last week. The meeting was not largely attended by the editors from Oregon, as it was too far away for many of them to attend. The O. R. & N. people kindly furnished transportation from Port land to Spokane and return, and their courtesy was appreciated by all those who went. The Spokane Press Club, and citizens of Spokane generally entertained the visiting editors in a royal manner. Among the many pleasant features of that occasion was a trolley ride over the city of Spokane, tendered by the Street railway Company, and an excursion to Couer 'd Aleue lake over the Northern Pacific railway, including a forty mile boat ride on the lake on the splendid lake steam er Georgia Oakes. Several other pleasant features of entertainment were piovided by the Spokane peo pie. The ride from Portland to Spo- i. j. i i i rji ....,. ,i ., f feature at this time of the year...

SAMPSON'S FLAGSHIP, THE NEW YORK, FIRING A NATIONAL SALUTE OPPOSITE GRANTS TOMB. 6 ilS SAMPSON RECEIVING. THE recent demonstration at New York In honor of the Santiago fleet was a tribute well deserved by the officers and men of the navy. The army has done well, but the navy has gathered the lion's share of the glory. And it may be confessed, now that Dewey and Schley and Sampson have Jnken their places beside Decatur and Terry and Farragut, that the triumphs of the United States navy were as surprising as they were gratifying. It is safe to say that most people were decidedly uneasy when the war began as to the effectiveness of the navy. Our warships had been running aground, smashing their machinery and 'jamming their turrets every time they left port. The mishaps of the Texas had become a subject for humorous comment and the mud bank misadventures of the Dolphin constituted a stock topic for the newspaper paragraphers. The country was distrustful and with some cause of the fighti...

EXTRA SESSION IN OCTOBER. Gov. Iord has been rusticating at Seal Rocks in this county re turned to Salem last Sunday, going out on the Sunday excursion. Be fore he left for Salem he was inter viewed by one of our local politic ians as to his intention of calling an extra session of the legislature, and we are informed that the gov ernor stated positively that he in tended to call such an extra ses sion and that the time for it would be in October. The statement of the governor was positive and our informant states that all doubt of such an extra session is now re moved, in his mind at least. If the legislatuie is convened in October it is held by many good constitutional lawyers of the state that their first buty will be to can vass the vote for governor cast at the last election and to declare Mr. Geer governor at one. Should this be done it will doubtless prove to be the undoing of the present gov ernor, as it is generally conceded that he would not call an extra ses sion were it ...
