C2 Site gutty notorial. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY. MAHCH 24. 1SS5 A LOGIQAL SEQUENCE. Tv.'ktty yeara ago Sherman was about fiuisliing Lis march o the sea, and wes planning the fall o Charles ton. A little more than twenty years ago some of the confederate leaders, civil and military, -were -writing letters to each other, letters which have just been published in the New York Sun, the Sunday Orcgonian and other journals, for the first time. They ware interesting, and, in a measure, instructive, inasmuch as they fur nish a logical sequence to the claimed (right of secession and a strong argu ment against" superior state rights by the very ones, who, four years before writing those letters, were among the most devoted of secession's adherents. The letters referred to were writ ten in January, 18G5, principally by A. G. Magratb, governor of South Carolina, J. H. "Watts, governor of Alabama, R. E. Lee, Jeff. Davis and W. J. Hardee. Sherman had just captured Fort MacAUister and Savannah, a...

(ZJ Sftc-SaUu Sbtorau. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY MARCH 23. 1885 INADMISSIBLE TESTIMONY. Thei had an old-fashioned debate in the Massachusetts legislature re cently, over a bill abolishing the rule which makes the testimony of per sons who do not believe in the exist ence of a God inadmissible in the courts of justice. The facts of daily life, as observed by everybody, shows that there is no perceptible difference in the matter of truth-telling between people who say they do not believe in the existence of a God and those who say they do. A dec laration cf this belief is in fact so easy, and does a man so much good with his neighbors, that nearly all liars make it as a matter of course. A man needs to be very honest and truthful to deny the existence of a God, and as a general rule the testi mony of such men is as apt to be reliable as that of professed believers. The principle that religious belief has nothing to do, and ought to have nothing to do, with a man's credibility as a .w...

f) ltc gaUxj gt.sioran. ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY. ..... MARCH 2G, 1885 THE CALIFORNIA FISHERY. WHALE Few people are aware of the extent of the whale fishery on this coast. There are many little coves along the coast of California where the hardy and daring whale catchers live in an unobtrusive manner, with no particu lar expense except cheap, strong clothing and plain and wholesome food. They have no operas to attend, few or no taxes to pay, no fences to build, or streets to grade, or lands to plow. Their home is on the sea, with brief Btays on the shore, where their duties consist in changing blubber to oil, which they put in barrels until they obtain enough for a shipment, when they lash the barrels together in the form of a raft, signal an empty lumber schooner, and float the raft of barrels of oil to the schooner, where they are hoisted on board and taken to ban irancisco, where they are turned into gold. Already during the present season nine whiles have been caught off the Lo...

(2) ASTORIA, OKEGON: FRIDAY.. MARCH 27.1685 HIDDEN TREASURE. Evebt year or so some imagin ative Bohemian o the "Washing ton press revives the old story o nntold wealth in the form o jewels that are hidden away in the vanlts of the treasury department Each time the value of the treasure is magnified until at last accounts seven or eight figures are required to express it In point of fact, there is a quart or more of precious stones in the bond vault of the treasurer's of fice, but, singular as it may appear, no one can be found who has any con ception of their value. About thirty years ago, during Pierce's time, an eastern potentate with an unpro nounceable name sent to the presi dent of the United States several swords heavily jeweled, a bottle of attar of roses and a jeweled casket The swords and presents could not be received by the president, inas much as a clause in the constitution prohibits the acceptance of gifts of this character.
