ft tn WAR ON THE HOPPERS THE GOVERNMENT PREPARES TO FIGHT THE INSECTS. Pest of the Great Farming Regions of the West and Southwest to Be Bat tied Against by Plajjue—Cause Great Annnal Damage. That the United States' great farm ing regions in the West and Southwest may be rid of a pest which annually threatens the crops with destruction and causes an enormous financial loss, the government has adopted a new and extraordinary means. Grasshoppers exist in untold numbers in New Mexi co, Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska, but the situation in Southern Texas seems to be worse than anywhere else. To relieve the distress occasioned by the grasshoppers, government entomol ogists are putting up in bottles disease germs of a fungous kind, deadly to grasshoppers, and is sending them to parts of the country where the damage threatens to be particularly severe. The fungus is obtained from South Africa, where it has been used with great success recently, vast armies of grasshoppers being literally...

THE VIRGINIA ENTERPRISE VIRGINIA, MINN. W. E. HANNAFORD, Publisher. The fight between the sopnomores and Ike freshmen of the Minnesota universi ty places higher education in the Gopher State a little closer to the gridiron. Judging from the narrow escapes of United States transports in the Philip pine service, the Pacific ocean received its name while the typhoon was lying low. The weather bureau station at Eagle, Alaska, has now been in operation for somewhat over a year. The lowest tem perature observed during that period was •58 degrees below zero in January of the present year. The average temperature for that month was 25 degrees below zero. During every month of the year the temperature fell below the freezing point, and zero temperatures were re corded in seven months out of the twelve. Lieut. Farnmond, the French naval at tache at Washington, has been advised thpt the training ship Duguay-Trouin, with a large number of French cadets on board, will visit American waters ...

it ynft Four of the dimes were dull and old, But one was shining and new, I'm told And once the little girl said to a friend, "This new one is almost too pretty to spend." At last the Christmas shopping was done The dimes were spent, yes, every one And Annette seemed the happiest girl alive As she hurried home with her parcels Ave. She had a secret for mother's ear. "I bought a nice present for papa dear. And for grandpa and grandma, and baby, too But I spent the shiniest dime for you. —Jossie L. Britton in St. Nicholas. How Dolly aud Jack Rescued Their Father from the Hessians. It was Christinas day, but there was no cheerfulness or mirth in the Trues dale family as they sat down to their midday meal. Nor was it the scant fare, which consisted of a dish of potatoes, a little pork and some rosy apples, that made the family so downhearted. There were only three of them that sat down to the table—Mrs. Truesdale, a sweet faced Quaker, and her two children, Jack and Dolly. Neither of th...

True Picture of Nineteenth Century Development Arranged In a Setting? of llmarpuMed Beauty and Splen dor at Pan-American Exposition. ?rj V* DAILYHABITSOFPOPE LEO, An Account of the Life of Head of the Catholic Church. DELICATEAND FRAGILE. With Mind Unimpaired, lie is a Strict Disciplinarian— What He Kata and Drinks. When there is a dearth of news, says a writer iii the Paris Figaro,'certain pa pers have always one item in reserve which they serve out personally—the ill ness of the Pop?. It is like the famous sea-serpent which is always appearing. Quite lately they have twice made Leo XIII. sick, and because of his old age the news seemed to have some semblance of truth in it, and gave much uneasi ness to the pious souls that are devoted to the holy father. This sickness of the pontiff, however, is happily pure fancy, and to reassure the credulous ones con cerning his health it is necessary for me only to give in detail how he passes his days and how he lives, and they will see that theiv has been scarcely any change iu his regime of today and of twenty years ag».
