A company of gentlemen were recently startled in the course of their conversation by one of their number remarking that he never gave more than ten cents to the sleeping-car porter in payment for that officials services. The re mark was at first taken jocosely, the amusement giving way to as tonishment, or rather to admiration at the courage of the man. If he had said he was a .Russian Nihilist and had so informed the czar to his face; or had refused to sign a friends petition for an effice: or had told Bismarck that the French statesmen could outwit him every time; had faced :i mob, or rescued a fellow being from death at the risk of his own life, his story would have excited warm appreciation without incredulity. The actual demand in Astoria to-day for more buildings, both for business and residences, is so great, and the prospect for its im mediate increase so apparent, that steps should be taken to meet it without delay. Private residences are not to be had at any price. This is merely an intimation of what is to come. Many causes are working together, the effect of which will be that our city will be over-crowded in a short time unless more buildings are erected. Ex cellent tenants aie to-day living in cheap and undesirable houses because better ones cannot be ob tained, and the demand for busi ness locations is just as urgent. fzl i ii. i i-if t it tfirarfetfaaaMMMaateaSwar -tti ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY . APRIL 17, 1881 . C. ICELAND Editor. Property In Washington. "Washington is not a commercial or manufacturing city. Its pro gress does not solely depend upon the business elements that are necessary for. the prosperity of other cities. Being the capital ot the Nation, there is centered the vast machinery of the United States government, wherewith the national affairs of over fifty mil lions of people are conducted. This requires the residence there of thousands of government officials and employes. The expen ditures to carry on the vast gov ernment business amount to a large sum. A general computa tion of this matter estimates that something over 1,500,000 is expended in Washington monthly, about 20,000,000 per year, which amount is disbursed throughout the community, and forms an im portant element in the business basis of Washingtons prosperity. This continues through dull as well as good times, and ther...

During the most of the present year, the writers have been engag ed in the study of the fishes of the Pacific coast of the United States, in the interest of the United States fish commission and the United States census bureau. The fol lowing pages contain the principal facts ascertained concerning the salmon of the Pacific coast. Iti.s condensed from our report to the United States census bureau, by the permission of Professor Goode, assistant in charge of fishery in vestigations. In troducing that of George Eliot, the Printer says: "Who has not longed to see the face of the author of Adam Bede and the Mill on the Floss. Yet, George Eliot shrank from gratifying this most laudable curiosity. Silver ton, Marion county, was out of the world upon its knees begging for capitalists to come and build them a railroad. -By perseverance the railroad was speedily pushed on to cbmpietion and Silverton made happy. But u we may presume to judge by the following para graph from the Appeal, they begin to regard it as a monopoly about to grind them to impalpable fine ness by its extortiens: The traveler is charged seventy five cents for riding on the nairow gauge road from Silverton to Woodburn, a distance of ten miles. The company recently charged $7 50 freight on three sewing machines from Portland to this place. These rates are largely in excess of those charged by the wide gauge, and eveiy able bodied citizen along the lino ought to kick against the extortion and howl too, for that matter. With 'the recognized advantage of local industries, and the almost imperative demand for develop ment in this direction, it would be natural to suppose that capital and enterprise thus directed would re ceive the largest encouragement and protection. Lack of appreci ation of home productions, and discrimination against them, in fa vor of foreign goods, give rise to frequent complaint. This applies chiefly to such articles as come in competition with similar foreign products shipped to tins market.
