LOCAL EVENTS OF THE WEEK TOGETHER WITH A PERSONAL MENTION OF THOSE IN THE riOVINO PANORAriA OP LOCAL HISTORY A. O. Lee, postmaster at Cunningham, was in the city Monday and reports everything shipshape and prosperous in the village forty miles west. Among the many improvements which are being en acted in the embryo metropolis will be the launching of a newspaper about May Ist with E. W. Allen of Elgin, Ore., at the helm. The business men have com bined together and guaranteed enough patronage to start the institution along the road of financial success. Such en terprise will certainly obtain results if followed out, and such liberality would help many other places if the same spirit was always shown toward the press. Erwin Kuhl, former clerk in H. E. Gritman's pharmacy, has purchased the interest of A. F. Phillippay in the Ritz ville Chop mill. The retiring member goes to Spokane, where he has embarked in the real estate business. The audience was not large, due to the inclement weather, but those present made up in enthusiastic quality what they lacked in numbers. Nearly every number on the program was encored. The vocal solos of Mrs. Kuria Strong and the piano renditions of Prof. W, B. Strong were especially favorably received. The college chor uses and glees were laughable and rend ered by 12 strong, well trained voices. After the show a dance and social time was given in Tinnel's hall in honor of the visitors. W. L. Howland returned last Satur day from a two months' eastern trip. He visited relatives in Maine, spent some time in New York city and intermediate points.
