ABILENE WEEKLY REFLECTOR, ABILENE, KANSAS, JULY 30, 1891. " tr - h I DEATH TOOK HIM. TRACTION ENGINEDANG EES. Disease at Last Claimed Its Young Victim. The young Burkhart boy whose suf ferings from supposed hydrophobia were related yesterday failed to stand the strain of the disease as it was hoped and expected he would be able to do. The little fellow had a hard . seige of the dread disease and it was not until last night that it reached the climax, ' when he died in convulsions. The hoy evidenced every indication of having been bitten by a mad dog but as he had, according to the doctor's judgment, other complications death was perhaps not the direct result of the bite. Ho was not especially vio lent except at periods aud stood the pain bravely. He passed away into the hereafter leaving a broken hearted mother and father to mourn his mem ory. "I believe Til throw it up and quit," he soliloquized. "I don't see what good I am here. The longer I work on the claim the more donbtf nl of success I grow. I have made a terrible blunder in love, and there is that lieutenant dangling after Florence; and she pleased with him, maybe. Stevens has grown so mysterious I can't make Irira out He evidently has got something better than the claim and is swinging off. ilcArdle and the agency can do all the work in that line, anyhow, or if necessary I can run down here occasionally and put in a few words. But I don't see why I should sacrifice the whole winter. It's a pleas ant climate, but I donbt if it is as good as it looks. I'm chilly and hot some times. I shouldn't wonder if it was malaria." "What do yon think of Quire?' asked Stevens, with burning eyes. "Why, I don't know," Windward re sponded. "I don't like him much cer tainly not in that light I never talked with Floy about it; perhaps I ought to. He makes himself agreeable, and they are much together. What do you think?" "He loves her," said Stevens fiercely. "Ah, 1 can see that much, and that side! And it is only natural, I suppose, that I should watch her anxiously to discover her feelings-toward him. She likes him; that is certain, and anybody can see. And I don't know I tell you. I don't want her to marry him. He is no goodr "Oh, no, ho is of no particular ac count," said Windward. ABILENE WEEKLY5 KEFLECTOJR, ABILENK, KANSAS, AUGUST 13, 1891. -v . -3 . y ' ABILENE THE VIOTOB. In the Ball Game Yesterday the Score Was 17 to 6. Fort RileyTsent up a handsome dele gation of bine coated defenders of the natlon'8 honor yesterday to help hurrah at the Ignominious defeat of the Belle of the Smoky. But they didn't hurrah any for the simple reason they didn't get a chance. They played good ball, but Abilene was too much for them all around batting, coaching' and kick ing, those essentials of a good player. Fort Riley went to bat and Abilene scattered themselves over the field in more or less appropriate attitudes and waited. Johnny Lott was in the box and he was in good form. McOall made a few faint efforts to find the ball and finally struck a short fly to the pileher. O'Toole followed and after several fouls struck out, seeming quite surprised at finding Abe Lott so close behind him. Tully fouled out to Kief fer who can play ball with greater success than he can run fo...

The jtate meeting of the Knights of Labor, which has been in session at Manhattan for the past several days has concluded to celebrate Labor day, and have chosen Abilene as the proper place to meet. The meeting will be the largest gathering of representative labor men that has ever convened in Kansas. T. V. Powderly, Grand Mas ter of the order, has signified his desire to be here as has also Weaver, Polk, and a host of lesser lights. ' It is fitting than a day should be set apart by the great state of Kansas for the benefit and glorification of the wage earner, and to meet in council and debate the questions in which we are all so vitally interested. The securing for Abilene of this meeting is due to the untiring efforts of Messrs. 13. M. Wallace and A. L. Russel, who have been in attendance at the Manhattan meeting. Abilene will put on he...
