The Commmonwcalth 1 „ . ¥g I Eaves-drop THOMAS LEONARD, J P in ß Last Thursday, came on, before his honor judge Ross, the trial of Thomas Leonard charged with being an eaves i/rc/i/ierl—-His 'offence, it appears, although recognized by the law, has not been, tried in any court of justice in this com‘.non wealth for many years. An eaves-dropper appears to be one, who lays under the windows, itc. of a per son’s house, and listens to the passing occurrences ol a family, with a view of giving publicity to slanderous and injurious reports. The novelty of the case drew to the court-house many spectators. Able council was employed on bofh hides, and after lengthy pleading, which lasted till sunset, the jury; on Friday morning returned a verdict ef guilty on two indictments ouf of four. A gentleman from Hartford, informs us advicts had reached the army, stating tliat the hostile chiefs, 'had embodied 3000 men between Port Early, and Fort, Scott for the pufpdse of attacking the detachment from this state, before they effected a junction with the "main body at the lafter place. Our troops left Hartford, on the 20th of 31st— Should the above account be true and the savages but stand their ground, the Georgia boys will soon give a good acouat of them. The disaster which Maj. Montgomery it laid Id have sustained we hope and believe to be entirely unfounded. THE RECESS. The following rertei are founded on tKe story of an English gentleman, and lady, who were on their passage to the T&st-lndies, in one of the Vessels of an English fleet. For some particular reason they left the vessel, Sc went on board the admiral’s ship, leaving two young children in the care of a negro servant, who was about IB years of age. In a violent storm, the ship containing the two children was fast sinking, when a boat arrived from the admiral’s ship, for their relief. The crew eagerly crowded to the boat—but the negro lad, finding there was only room for him alone or the two children, generously put them on board, and remained himself on the wreck, which with the generous boy, was immediately angulphed in the ocean: BT SILLSCK OSBOBN.
