NEW YORK STATE VGRM IXTl RAL SO- TIM RISK GROWING. the forests wero obstacles in the way of progress, but now wo need moro than we have; 4,000,000 acres are destroyed ovcry year, against only 150,000 started, and only a small part of the wood is turned to good account. Timber is getting very scarce in many localities; and the climate is also affected—the amount of annual rainfall perhaps remaining constant, but its distribution and evaporation changing. On §arid plains around Nineveh there is rain ugh, but it is quickly dried up by the d, for lack of woodlands. Sudden ds too are more violently destructive in open countries, vegetable mould and leaves being wanting, to hold the streams in check. A man might be appointed to take charge of the forests of the State and to givo instruction in arboriculture, as is done in Europe. Deciduous trees yield more profit than evergreens, the latter requiring too much aid. The Silver Maple is...

A meeting of the Woodlawn Agricultural Society was held February 21th, at the house of Jasper May, in Accotink. Our host having no farm to criticize, the chairman of the Critical Committee, I*. 11. Troth, read a "memorial report lo the (leneral Assembly of Virginia," in regard to the tax imposed by a compulsory fence law, prepared by Frank Q. Ruflin, Esq., in which he showed by figures, the enormous cost to the farmer of building and maintaining fences. A gentleman from Michigan—Mr. Willis —staled that the old English common law which required every owner of live stock to take care of the same, independent of his neighbor, was held in that state above all state law. This law appeared to meet the wants of a majority of the members of the club as expressed iv a petition to the General Assembly, that Ihe law i...

(Evening State goutnat SATURDAY EVEN'G, MARCH 2,1872. FREE DISCUSSION. An Appeal to our Citizens. A snow-storm, such as has been very I rarely known here, even in mid-winter, has, this 2nd of March, been raging through tho past night and still rages with unabated fury, and with no prospect of abatement. The snow, drifted by a f'tcrco and freezing wind, lies in many places several feet deep. The city was, perhaps, never so ill supplied, and almost destitute of fuel, especially of wood, the chief fuel of the poor, and, to some extent, needed by all. Very many, hoping that there would be little or no more severe weather, are unusually ill supplied with clothing. The provison made for the poor at the beginning of the winter by the City Council and by tho various charitable societies, calculated to last ai most only during winter is probably exhausted. The suffering among the destitute, and even among those comparatively comfortable under ordinary circumstances, must be extensive and int...

(Evening State gJtnmwJ. MONDAY EVENING, MARCH 4,1872. the perilling resolution a preamble and resolution, setting fnilli that the allegations made have not been sustained, and that tho extended and elaborate discussion which has prevailed for two weeks lias demonstrated that the War Department officials are guiltless of all blame. He then reviewed at length the circumstances attending the sales of arms to Remington and Richardson, and maintained that there was no evidence to show that the I T nited States officials were cognizant of Remington's connection with the French government. There was nothing in the circumstances to lead them to imagine even that the arms wero going to France. They had just as much cause to suspect that they were going to Prussia. Tlie amendment of Mr. Schurz, directing an inquiry as to whether the defensive capacity of the country was not impaired by the large sales of arms, was adopted without, opposition.
