Sn«i I<"Yanolsvo. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 8 May 1851

Sn«i I<"Yanolsvo. We rejoice in the fact that the energetic people of this city arc beginning to react upon the awful calamity entailed upon them, and that already the rubbish and ruins occasioned by the fire are being cleared away to give place to the foundations of new structures more perfectly secure from this consuming clement. In Montgomery street, Aye understand that n large number of line buildings are already contracted for and will be completed in a few weeks. This we contemplate with as much pleasure and satisfaction a.s we have the glorious enterprise of the people of San Francisco in their more prosperous days. But while the indications of the rapid reconstruction of portions of the burned districts are thrillingly delightful, yet it is a matter of serious regret that more attention lias not been paid to the widening of their streets and the settling upon a uniform system of putting up buildings which would Buccessfully resist future fires. The widening of the...

BY THIS MORNING'S BOAT [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 8 May 1851

BY THIS MORNING'S BOAT Througli Vreeman «.V CoJa ExproKs. The New World arrived last night at 12 o'clock p.m.. at her wharf. .She left the Bay at ten minutes past 4 o'clock p.m. Additional Particulars ! From t]v> AlU California. Dr. E. P. Jones's house in California street, and the two buildings above it, all of wood, escaped narrowly. The safety of Maeondray & Co.'s stores in Sansome street, was owing to their own foresight and exertions rather than to any lucky accident, as their friends conceive, and are pleased to congratulate them. On the contrary, they had the wisdom to provide for such an emergency by sinking a large tank, containing thirty thousand gallons of sea-water: and by employing a large number of men on the occasion, abundant supply of water was dashed over the roof and front of their premises, and plenty of blanks were kept saturated to damp the flames where they might catch.
