\n Ohio editor gives his views of JS dances which he lately witnessed 'yi in Washington. He savs : -The Dt of variety in this Metropolitan danc- *. w! , however, fully made up by the Lev thing*, such us the waltz ami polka. These were absolutely barbaious. The old fashioned waltz, the morality of which even Byron called in question, is here ignored *8 altogether too cold and distant. The gentleman thus entwined, throws his head back and his eyes up, like a dying calf; his body hent'in the shape of a figure 4, he whirls, bucks up, swings around, swoons, to all appearances, dashes forward, and leaves the ring to the delight of all decent people." _ _ MnscnisG THE llioirr OP TREES. — A crrespondei t ?ays the II r iculturis...

TUB GREAT MYSTERY. —The following beautiful passage is taken from Timothy Titromb s (Dr. Holland s) '"Preachings upon Popular proverbs: 1 ' ' The body is to die;" so much is certain. What lies beyond ? No one who passes the charmed boundary comes back to tell. The imagination visits the realm of shadows—sent out from some window of the soul over life's restless waters—but wings its way wearily back with no olive leaf in its beak as a token of emerging life beyond a closely blending horizon. The groat sun routes and goes wearily in the heavens. yet breathes no secret of the ethereal wilderness. The crescent moon cleaves her nightly passage across the upper deep, but tosses overboard no message and displays no signals. The sentinel -tars challenge each other they walk their nightly rounds, but we catch no syllable of their countersign which gives passage to the heavenly camp. Shut in! Shut in! Between this and the other life there is a great gulf fixed. across which neither eye nor fo...

The Enloglti upon Br ode rick. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 10 March 1860

The Eulogies upon Broderick. What an empty thing is an eulogy, when custom sanctions its delivery by a bitter, sneering enemy of the dead man, who is its subject. From the day that the Democratic party of California was divided into two wings, tfroderick and antiBroderick, the dead Senator had no two more nncompromisingenemies than Judge Hann and John C. Burch. And all may know that Mr. Broderick in his doings with the politicians in this State, knew no such divided relationship as personal friend and political enemy. Strong as liis perception was, he never recognized Ihe rompatability of such an union of opposing characteristics. Such was the uncompromising character of the man. This feeling originating upon one side, was soon germinated upon the other. Those who were not for Broderick were lgainst him. not after the manner of orlinary opposition, but in a spirit of hate. A wide gulf was between the two wings, \nd an ocean of gall lay betwixt Broderick and all his foes. We cannot b...

Sacramento Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 10 March 1860

Sacramento Correspondence. I From our own CurrMpoiHleot.] SACRAMENTO, March 8, 1860. EDITOR APPEAL :—The Capitol Committee have reported finally, and recommend that the seat of government remain at Sacramento. So the Messrs Bowers who deal in produce, and " sich " at this point will now rest in quiet. It is rather hard that the Supervisors did not know how the Committee stood before donating to the State the $B,OOO per annum for rent of Capitol. There was a Bulkhead disscussion iu the Senate, with an account of which it is unnecessary to bore your readers, as I have plenty of other material which will answer that purpose. A resolution to send down a Committee of inquiry, for the purpose of taking a few more tons of testimony, was very sensibly rejected. The vote which defeated the bill to bestow 510,000 upon the Ladies' Seamen's Friend Society was reconsidered. Several ladies were in the Senate Chamber, which caused some Senators to put an their -'pooties," and to spout in a manner ...
