DEACON JOHN. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 19 November 1873

DEACON JOHN. A holier man than Deacon Johu You scarce could hope to find; or one who mourned more loud and long, The sins of human kind. His lengthened visage bore a stamp That could not he mistook. Beside the upward glance- -that gave Him such a saintly look! Sundays he kept in solemn stale; If he could have his way, No i tiril should sing, or flowers bloom Cpon the Sabbath day! His children learned the day to dread, As wearily forlorn; They conned their catechisms o'er And wished 'twas Monday morn! He Judged all men children of wrath Who wore a smiling face; And quoted scripture by the hour, However out of place. All love of art or ornament He reckoned as a sin; And song and dance were Satan's games, In which he'd surely win! Yet keen ami shrewd was Deacon John In temporal a Hairs; No man was sharper In a trade, Or close at splitting hairs. Aud though to swell subscription lists, His name he promptly put— The wood he sold to Widow Jones Was scanty full a foot! With might and main ...

EDUCATIONAL. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 20 November 1873

EDUCATIONAL. COUNTY EXAMINATIONS. During an experience of four years as Chairman of the County Board of Examination, I have received, in connection with the appointed members ofthe Board, many blessings (?) from disappointed applicants, or from those who failed to receive certificates. Any one, who knows how the examinations are conducted, would not censure the Board were he to fail; but as there are failures at every meeting of the Hoard, and the usual accusations of favoritism to some and prejudice against others, a few words of explanation as to how the examinations are conducted may not be out of place. The County Superintendent is Chairman of the Board, which is composed of himself and three appointed members. The appointed members must hold either first grade county or State certificates to be eligible. The questions are prepared by the State Board of Examination for the whole State, sealed, and sent out quarterly to County Superintendents, and tiro not to be opened until the ...

VISIT YOUR SCHOOLS. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 20 November 1873

VISIT YOUR SCHOOLS. We wonder how many parents ami guardians, whose eyes will fall upon the three words heading this article, ever thought of the encouragement afforded a teacher, or the new interest awakened in v pupil, by a visit to the school room? Day after day, through ten long months in the year, the teacher patiently toils amidst the same scenery and surroundings to expand the minds under his or her charge, and at the end exhibit it to the parent or guardlan a faithful record of services, evidenced by the advance of the scholar to a grade of intelligence of which both parent and scholar are Kroud. While this gradual change as been taking place, while this nature was being fashioned in such manner as to affect, perhaps, the whole future life, how much actual interest have you manifested? How many visits to the school room have you made? How much of the teacher's system of instruction have you made yourself familiar with? We ask these questions of parents because of all the rec...
