SOPHIA PEROVSKAIA THE NIHILIST. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 7 March 1884

SOPHIA PEROVSKAIA THE NIHILIST. She was beautiful. It was not her beauty which dazales at first sight, but that which fascinates the more, the more it is regarded. A blonde, with a pair of blue eyes, serious and penetrating, under a broad and spacious forehead. A delicate little nose, a charming mouth, which showed; when she smiled, two rows of very fine white teeth. Sophia Perovskaia's mother, who adored her daughter, hastened from the Crimea at the first annonnoement of the arrest. She saw Bophia for the last time on the day of the verdlct. During the five other days, under one pretext or another, she was always sent away. At last she was told to come on the morning of April 15, and that then she would see her daughter. She went; but at the moment when she approached the prison, the door was thrown wide open, and she saw her daughter, in truth-but upon the fatal cart. It was the mournful procession of the condemned to the place of execua tion. " I will not narrate the horrible det...

MEDITATIONS OF'A HIND SOE8PTIfO, -0----* All the world over, I wonder, in lands that I never have trod. Are the people eternally seeking fotthtsalgn ofa God! Westward aereas the ocea, and' n h ard ayout thesnow, - Do they all stand gazing, as ever, and what do the whisetknow ? Here, in this mystical India, thedettie hover and swarm, LIke the wild bees heard in the tree tops, or the gusts of a gathering storms; In the air men hear their voices, theirfeet on the rocks are seen. Yet we all say, " Whence is the message, and what may the wonders mean ?" A million shrines stand open, and ever the censer swings, As they kneel to a mystic symbol, or the figures of ancient kings ; And the incense rises ever, and rises the end less cry Of those who are heavy laleun, and of cowals loth to die. For the destiny drives us together,.lllke deer in a paIs of the hills. Above is the sky, and around us the sound and the shot thit kills ; Pusnled by a Power we see not, andstruck by a hand unknown..
