Open Coluui u [We invite commiiniailioiit for Out column —lint do nal IwU our set us respon sible foe aiii/ opi'iions expressed tltereui ] The Sewerage Question. TO TIIE EDITOR. Sir, — I observed a letter in vour last issue re above scheme from Air Dill, in which he objects to the Council carrying out the work proposed by them,on various grounds. I think the reasons urged by him should be care fully weighed by the Council before pledging the credit of the ratepayers for such a Jarge sum, for what is, we are informed, merely an experiment in sewerage. I may say, sir, I have taken, like others, an interest in this question since *=F- noticed that the Council seriously contemplated forcing this scheme on the ratepayers. Like, Air Dill, I object for very much the same reasons. Now that the times are soi bad in the Dronertv market*,. wlii'Mi,ni,i,ii this scheme be forced on us f Have-, we not got a very satisfactory servicti at present I Certainly the pan-rate is too high. An UnstampedReceipt.— On Friday an appeal by A. A. Lysaght, solicitor, of Wol longong, against a conviction by the local Bench under the Stamp Act, was dealt with by Mr JusticcCohen in chambers. Lysaght had been fined £2,on the information of Ellen Bruce for giving a receipt for £2 2s, without affixing a duty stamp, his contention being that the amount of the debt was only £1 11s 6d, the amount of 2 guineas liaving been disputed, the lesser amount being accep ted by him in settlement. His Honour held that the receipt purported to be for £2 2s, and being unstamped, the recipient was liable under the Act for failing to stamp a receipt for £2 or upwards. It was not disputed that only.fl 1 Is Gdwas received by Lysaght, and his Honour said that, though on the face of it it was a receipt for 2 guineas, no moral wrong had been done b}' appellant in not stamping it. Under The Roof-Tree. "From grave to gay—from lively to severe" [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 7 March 1901

Under The Roof-True. ' From grave to gay — from lively to severe.' (By Deborah.) The handwriting of the famous Scotch divine, Dr. Chalmers, was no very illegible that his fond mother used to say to her husband, when a letter arrived from her son, ' Just lay' it aside, and Tammas will read it to us hiinsel' when he comes home.' ' Give me your candid judgment on these lines,' said the young lady of literary aspirations. 'Do they con vey the idea of poetry at all V' Yes,' replied the editor, looking them over, ' they do.' ' Every line,' continued the kind-hearted man, letting her down as gently as he could, ' begins with a capital letter.' A famous professor once boasted that he could pun upon any words. He was told that he could not pun upon the three Latin gerunds di, do, dam, whereon he gave the following answer : — ' When Dido found Xmam would not come, Khc mourned in silence and was Di, da, dutn.' Bank-notes in rural districts are sometimes in the hands of the public, for years be...
