THE WARRNAMBOOL TO HAWKESDALE RAILWAY. To the Editor of the Argus. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 15 December 1876

THE WARRNAMIBOOL TO UAWKESDALE RAILWAY. To the Editor of the Argus. Sir,-I write to acknowledge the eood sense and moderation of your leading arlicle on tihe subject of the railway projected between Warrnambool and Hawkesdale, and having lome knowledge of thel localites I think it a proper time for writing. I have seen the mn?catdalise roads to which you refer; they have been made at great and continuous out Ihy for many years past; they are excellent- none better. And I entirely agree with you that to make a railway from Warrnttnbool to IItwkesdale is rathor too much of a good thing. It reminds one of the " huge windows that exclude the light, and passages that lead to nothing." Your idea of tlhe "moderate pwrtlality to friends" on the part of tihe Ministry is rather a mild way of putting it, but t it not a subjct to quarrel about. It struck mne long ago that it was a c0se on tihe Ministearlt part of sie olto sic juaeo. I entirely agree with you, that to utterly ex tiguisll IsiBtfa...

It is unfortunately too much the rule to do little or'?nthing but scold and wrangle ..through the earlier part of the session and then hurry through measures at the close without due delhberation. As a rule it is not the fault of the rank and file amongst members, but the leaders in the Bouse, who are to blame for the time -wasted in needless discussions on poiilts that are of secondary importance, whilst the questions of greatest consee queuce are pushed on or kept back to suit the political aims and ends of Ministers. The Railway Construction Bill of the current session was kept back till it was impossible for the country to judge of " the details, and that such is the case is owing to the bungling way in which the measure has been introduced.
