THE NORTH AUSTRALIAN. IPS WWII, TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 1857. — , ? ^ On Tuesday, the 7th instant, the Rev. Dr. Lang delivered a lecture at the School of Arts, in Brisbane, 'On the probable results of Sepa ration, and the way in which it should be turned to account for the welfare and advance ment of the new colony.' As it is not in our power to re-print the whole of the report of this lecture which appears in the Courier of Saturday last, we shall confine ourselves to a brief notice of the various subjects mooted on this occasion by the reverend lecturer. State, aud the pitiful remonstrances and re-j prcseutatiouB which it gave rise to, and with which the public are familiar, the lecturer pays a well-merited compliment to Mr. Ro bkrt Campbell, whose solitary vote in favour of justice to Moreton Bay, he said deserved our warmest acknowledgements. He...

America's Gift to England's Queen — Queen Victoria is a woman, a lady, and tho chief of her State, and it would be impossible for her to tnke part in the unwontod cercinonv of Tuesday last without many a strange thought. On the deck of her own ship, the Resolute, she wns the guest ; her host was a plain sailor. Unquestionably no small degree of republican sobriety markod tiie mode of Captain HMtstefti'fcjftdjircss. He fjaid :— ' Allow mo to wel come your Majesty, on board tho Resolute, and in obedience to the will of my countrymen and of the President of the United States to restore her to you, not only as an evidence of a friendly feeling to your sovereignty, hut nx a token of love, admiration, and respect to your Majesty personally.' . THE NORTH AUSTRALIAN. JPSWTGIT, TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 1857. It is universally admitted that a colony may be much benefited by takiuga Census, aud tho keeping of a correct register of the social con dition of the people ; and it has been wcii said that one which keeps no statistical records may be likened to a merchant who transacts business without account books, or ever strik ing a balance. Statistics bear not ouly upon the public, but many of the private, interests of life, and it is quo of its minor recommenda tions that mattene of faut can by ite means be substituted for vague and indefinite general impressions. Apart, then, from its evident utility, particularly in a young colony, an account of the Census is peculiarly interesting, inasmuch as the progress that has been mode ia population can be periodically traced with con siderable accuracy, and ite social condition as certained with tolerable certainty. Rather more than a year has elapsed when the Census of this colony was ta...
