IMMIGRATION AND INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 15 June 1914

IMMIGRATION AND INDUSTRY. It seems, and is, a disastrous circumstance, when even a Liberal Government is moved to apology at the suggestion of immigration. It proves how deeply the selfish sectional opposition of the trades unions has sunk, and that political cowardice is a virile trait of every brand of administration. Thompson and Company, of Castlemaine Engi neering Works (V.),.who have accepted the con tract for the construction of 25 locomotives for the Railway Department, wrote recently to the Minister for Lands complaining that, though they spent £50,000 in new buildings, machinery and tools, and had everything ready for making rapid progress with the work, they had been unable to obtain the necessary skilled labor. They desired permission to nominate imme diately about 90 tradesmen from England, and arrange for their passages through the Government Immigration Office in London. ' The Minister replied that 'he thought the Government would have to consider the request favorabl...

"JUST LIKE SYDNEY." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 15 June 1914

'JUST LIKE SYDNEY.' The building regulations of the city of Brunswick have long been regarded by ratepayers in the light of a farce, and a competition has been started in which a substantial prize is offered to the person who can produce a copy of them (says the 'Age'). At North Brunswick Progress Association on Satur day night Mr. T. B. Husreran referred to a building in course of erection at Davies Street, Brunswick, a side wall of which was said to be about 12 inches only from the boundary fence. The house adjoin ing it was four feet from the fence, so that the owner of the latter structure was practically having his daylight stolen. To protect himself the owner had put up a barricade in front of the side window of the new building. If that were in accordance with the regulations, it was time they were altered. Mr. C. E. Ogden said the building regulations had never been in order since 1S88, when they were adopted. There were only two copies in existence, the original one and one...

IN QUEENSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 15 June 1914

IN QUEENSLAND. Mayor Allen, of South Brisbane, told the Queens land Good Roads Association the whole question was whether; the. ratepayers were prepared to pay for good roads. They all knew their own defects so far as roads were concerned. The idea was to stimulate public interest in the matter. If an extra halfpenny were added in the rates, the experi ence had been that a howl of indignation followed. in yueensland anything new is regarded as an attempt to deviate the course of justice and inter fere with the liberty of the subject. Mayor Russell, of Hamilton, has, however, had the temerity to take his life — officially speaking — in his hands. He has suggested that the Government should control and maintain the main roads. In other words, Queens land should have a Main Roads Board- as in Victoria. Of course, the suggestion is common sense, but in Queensland common sense isn't always wisdom, or rather, it isn't always wise to be sensible, especially when established custom is threa...

BUILDERS' LABORERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 June 1914

BUILDERS' LABORERS. '.I 'he High Court has refused the Master Builders' Association leave to appeal to the Privy Council in the Builders Laborers' case. The appeal, however, is to be made. As already pointed out .the existence of the Federal Arbitration 'Court and Arbitration Courts in each. of the States js causing a. beautiful, industrial mix-up. The trouble in the building trade is the best example of this. All the trades .engaged in the industry;1 except laboreis, are' working under State awards providing for a 4S-hours': week. "LET THE STATE TAKE IT OVER"! [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 June 1914

'LET THE STATE TAKE IT OVER'! There is a growing tendency to apply the above ]jhra.se indiscriminately with the satisfaction that, if anything is wrong, then, under the State, every thing will be made right. Experience does not prove this. The State of N.S.W.. for instance, has been in possession of the magnificent area known as the Rocks for many years. That fine area is situated in proximity to the bulk of the wharves, and to thousands of warehouses, a.s' well as being within _-Sn1v :\ (ow iiiiiiiitnH \v:illv nf tlif* vprv hpnrt of the 'city. ' . '..'' M Those who believe in the special value of State action should take a walk around that district and estimate how far the State is efficient as a solver of the economic problem. The fact is that it is not glaringly successful as an ordinary landlord.
