LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. ENTERTAINMENT AT MOUNT ELIZA INVALID DEPOT. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 February 1883

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. ENTERTAINMENT AT'mOUNtT ELIZA INVALID DEPOT. Sir, — I beg most humbly to request that you will be pleased to insert the following,, allowing me to sign myself, under the cir cumstances, one of the recipients. Con tiuued illness has prevented the forwarding of this at an eai*lier da! e, -which barely makes it of such interest as otherwise it would have been. — Your obedient servant, WILLIAM CARPENTER. 6th February, 1S83. It has been truly remarked by an old writer that amongst the whole catalogue oE virtues there is none that ennobles the mind or gives so great a degree of pleasure to the heart as that of charity, and that the breast devoid of this is a stranger to all the finer feelings of our nature ; for what, he asks, can give such exquisite delight as to be the means of assisting our poor fellow creatures through the innumerable difficulties of life's uneven and checkered path ? This was fully exemplified at the enteT-tainment held at the Mount Eliza Inval...

The Daily News. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 February 1883

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1883. Following the example of the carter mentioned in .ZEsop's Fables the citi zens of Perth have yet to learn that Providence will assist those only who help themselves. Conscious of a great want — grumbling at their need not being satisfied — complaining at the lack of enterprise exhibited by the ' foreign ' capitalists in not promptly advancing their cash eveu before they have been asked to do so — onr citizens remain content to rub along in their old-fashioned way, simply because they want the energy to do their own work — to supply their own needs. In 1876 the first Gas Company in Western Australia was formed, but the whole affair speedily collapsed, owiug to the want of that support which the public should, bnt did not give. It was in vain that the Pr'ess pointed out the advantages the citizens would obtain if the Company were enabled to begin their work — it was in vain that they were earnestly exhoi ted to have their ' Fair City ' properly lighted — t...

OUR NEW GOVERNOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 February 1883

? ? - ? ? ? ... OUR NEW GOVERNOR. The following is an extract from La Sentinelle de Maurice newspaper of Decem ber 20: — With respect to the appointment of His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor to the Government of Western Australia, we offer him our congratulations upon his. promotion, and the more agreeable avoca-. kions which await him. Instead of having to deal with such questions as reforesta tion, coolie labour, and kindred subjects, he will be called upon to assist in the development of a new country in which they arer cutting down trees instead of planting ? them. There, he will find no burning labour question to trouble him, nor will he be held personally responsible for unpalatable measures which pass the Legis lature ; for the popular vote preponderates. If the trade and revenue of W. Australia are smaller than those of Mauritius, and the sums to be. dealt with are insignificant in comparison to ours, His Excellency may find some, compensation in the fact that he willrul...

CYCLING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 February 1883

CYCLING NOTES. By Hub. On Wednesday last three members of the M.B.C. left by train for North Fremantle. On arrival at that convenient station they 'straddled the 'T-isskin' and made for Fremantle. As they crossed the Bridge two members of the F.B.C. joined them, and together merrily entered the Port, causing some of the Portonians a little amusement as they watched the graceful gliding of the ' two-wheelers.' After doing the town and refreshing the inner man the M.B.C.'s started at 7 o'clock for their ride home, being accompanied for some distance by the F.B.C.'s Notwithstanding the warm weather and small amount of practice the trip home of twelve miles was accomplished in about lh. 15m. I notice in The Cyclist that the new Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Derby, has consented to be a patron of the Liverpool Old Boys' B.C., which goes to show that this manly and healthful exer cise is in some repute in the old country. I hope to be able to give you a few notes from time to ...

The Daily News. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 12 February 1883

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1883. In one respect at least Western Aus tralia is far in advance of the more richly endowed sister colony of Vic toria, inasmuch as we can post our newspapers to any part of the colony free of cost, whereas in Victoria a tax is levied upon the local diffusion of public intelligence in the shape of postage. Before, however, we natter ourselves upon our superiority in this respect, it would be as well if 'we, by comparing our colony with the little island of Tasmania, see how far we' are still in the rear in the race of pro gress. Not only can a Tasmanian post his newspapers to any part of the island free of cost, but he can send them to any part of the - Australian colonies at the same rate) and thus the inhabitants of that picturesque isle have the advantage over ns. It would, we fear, be almost useless for us to urge our Legislature to adopt the same plan, and to abolish news paper postage upon Western Austra lian papers ; but we will venture to point out tha...
