CARE OF CREAM FOR CHURNING. [Newspaper Article] — Penshurst Free Press — 19 September 1914

CARE OF CREAM FOR CHURNING. XSood butter is", largely dependent upon the care' which haB been given' the cream while; it 13 being, saved 'jnd rip ened for a churning. Improper care of - cream is. almost sure to. ,caus'£ poor but ter, while, careful management of it ;uBualljr will result in good butter. The margin of profit In good- butter over that of poor quality is sufficient so that it is highly profitable to take every pos sible precaution which will ensure but ter of the better quality. The creamery buttermaker has to take cream as he gets it and make the best of it. Often it is tainted and .really unfit for making a high grade quality of buSt'er. We talk largely.' noiv upon - the need1 • for capturing Germany's trade for Britain and Aus tralia, but will we not, when, at . long last, the war is" over, and normal con ditions again hold sway, revert to the old easy-going fashion of taking the goods the gods provide without troub ling ourselves over much where they come from, and satisfied that they are serviceable and do not involve any strenuous -departure from the busi ness of eating, drinking, and being merry, that has up to now, made up such a considerable portion of the sum of existence with us. , Some indication of the trend of the movement was afforded at the monthly meeting of the Victorian Chamber of Manufactures the other evening when a letter was received from the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures, requesting...

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. [Newspaper Article] — Penshurst Free Press — 26 September 1914

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. . (By "Ambrosirie.") The peace of Europe having been once again disturbed, and the tiny State of Montenegro being again in volved, it is interesting to note some of the characteristics of the women of this interesting country. Curiously enough, owing to the mountainous condition of the country, which forbids the use of carriages, the fighting force is dependent upon its women folk both for its commis sariat and for its supply of ammuni tion. ' An ambulimco has recently been provided, and a few carts for conveying goods from pass to pass, but the ivives and daughters of the troops carry the food and prepare it, make the camp, move it, do all the drudgery, and take no small share of the irsii. They will be seen hovering on the edge of the firing line witfi fresh supplies of ammunition on their backs and in their hands. They tend whenever possible out of the range of fire; In every campaign, the little State has waged—and its wars have been incessant for the • last s...

OF RURAL INTEREST [Newspaper Article] — Penshurst Free Press — 26 September 1914

' OF RURAL INTEREST ] (By "Rusticus." Among the reports from country districts' regarding the effects 'of the season is at least one satisfactory item. It comes from a Shepparton correspondent, who states that con siderable activity is being shown ; in t)ie irrigation areas near the town, :iiid irrigators are taking steps to put all available land under cultivation, in addition to the subdivision of land by the Government, private land hold ers are making available large areas, subdivided into small blacks. The de mand for this land, consequent on the drought, is growing rapidly, and buy ers are eagerly planting lucerne and other fodders. Provided there is sufficient water to meet the demand, tho development should increase the acreage now under lucerne twofold. A more general realisation of the value of lucerne growing would do much for the producing interests of Victoria, and anything tending to show in creased activity in raising that invalu able fodder is gratifying. ?.lr.
