THE FISHERITES. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 10 April 1878

ITHE FISHERITES. (From the Austral Review for March.) About ten years ago, James Fisher, a charcoal burner in Nuuawading, eight miles from Melbourne, gave out that he received the spirit of prophecy, which he exercises to this day. He dreamed, ac- cording to his own account, that he saw the rain descending upon the cabbages in his garden, and heard a voice telling him to eat the cabbages and he would receive the spirit, which came down in the rain. He complied with this, and so became a prophet. Up to that period he had been a believer in the works of John Wroe, who claimed to be inspired. Wroe, after gaining celebrity in England, came to Australia, and died in Melbourne. His book purports to be a revelation, supplementary to the Bible. It is of a harmless description, bound in leather, resembling a spelling-book cover. The contents are visions, imitating those of Ezekiel, but, having the same apparent honesty as spiritualistic and mediunmistic communications. The Christian Isrelite...

The South Bourke AND Mornington Journal. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10th, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 10 April 1878

The South Bourke and Mornington Journal.         WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10th, 1878.     It will be with a feeling of regret that the public will look back on the late failure of Parliament to provide a line to connect Oak- leigh with Melbourne--not that the proposed line was by any means a good one; on the contrary it was open to many serious ob- jections, but it is without doubt a disgrace to the legislature that this question after years of delay still remains unsettled. In rejecting the latest proposal of Mr. Woods the members of the Council appear to have exercised a wise discretion; it was open indeed to greater objections than the cele- brated line originally proposed that was to go on stilts over the Hobson's Bay railway;   it would have damaged the reserves in the   neighbour of Melbourne to a greater ex- tent , and would have materially affected the rights of property owners in...
