Station Telephones. AN INTERESTING EXHIBIT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Station Telephones. AN INTERESTING EXHIBIT. The forthcoming sheepbreeders' show is going to be one of the most impor tant events of the year. Not only will there be a large exhibition of the finest sheep that the world can produce, but there will be a keen competition amongst a number of breeders as to who can produce the best sheep for export. There will also be a great sheep-dog trial, when the ' Shepherd's Friend ' will be brought into play for trial of intelligence and caninesagacity. There will also be an exhibition of the new force in the world, electricity, as devoted to the purposes of the stock owner, in the way of station telephones. Two patentees are going to show what their respective instruments can do, and the trial v. ill be watched with deep interest by the hundreds of stock owners present from all parts of Aus tralasia. In a recent issue we gave a pretty full account of the one system, and we now propose to give the other side a hearing. The one under discussion is ...

Brooks's Herd Book. THE STUD REGISTER OF AUSTRALASIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 3 July 1896

Brooks's Herd Book. THE STUD REGISTER OF AUSTRALASIA. Some months ago we raised the cry of a ' Herd Book ' for Australasia and we asked the advice of our readers on tho subject. Wo drafted out a scheme such as we thought would till the bill and waited. It says some where, ' Ho that believeth shall nob make haste.' Well, this herd book is wanted, we believe in it, and we're going to bring it out. Wo believe in the future of the ' Sydney Stock and Statiou Journal ' as the pastoral paper of Australasia, and we're not making unseemly haste. Large bodies move slowly and oak trees aro not the children of an hour. Jonah's gourds spring up in a night, but the heat of the mid-day sun scorches them. Now thio Herd book has got to last for generations, and we're not rushing it, so we've asked all your views on the subject and the replies we've got would warm the heart of a frozen man. Our original plan has been very greatly modified, and here is the new and revised version. We will open a Stud ...

The Anthrax Articles. THE "WOOLLY FESTIVAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 3 July 1896

The Anthrax Articles. THE 'WOOLLY FESTIVAL.' A man said to me the other night, ' If you publish those anthrax articles in book form I'll buy one ; but, mind, the pictures must be with 'em.' Sez I, 'Sir, they shall be published in book form after that.' As a matter of simple fact a good many people had asked the same question, only in different words. That man wanted them in a permanent form, so do a good many others. In stead of makiug them into a special shilling book we'll include them in our 'Woolly Festival.' Thousands of people get that, and hundreds of them send us their shilling for it, too. Some send their subscription along with the shilling! We're ii't running thi3 paper entirely as a charity. We don't do much for nothing, and not a great deal for a shilling, but, at the same time, we give a good deal away iu hopes of getting more back ! Sprats and mackerels, you know ! Well, the anthrax articles have ' caught on,' and we expect to get a first-class scientific man to write...

A WEEK'S ACTIVITIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 3 July 1896

A week's activities. There are a largo number of stock owners in Sydney at the present tetne, a far larger number than could possibly be gathered together under any circum stances elsewhere. Now is the time to make representa tions when they will do the most) good. The general idea is that stock owners come to town to enjoy them selves. Some of thorn do ! But a large number of them come on business bent, and they stick to their work like men. If they attend to business this time there's a terrible lot to get through. To-night there's a meeting of the Pastoralists' Union, and that will be an important meeting, for these bo perilous times, and stock-owners need to be wide awake. The Pastoralists' Union has done good work in the past, and is capable of much in tho future if its members atand shoulder to .shoulder. All meu, who have the good of the country at heart and are members of the Union ought to roll up there. On Saturday (tomorrow) night, there is a meeting of delegates from the...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 3 July 1896

Gossip. Once upon a time I knew a lot of girls in what was called the ' Senior Bible Class.' When they had grown old enough to go out into the world to take their places with the work-a-day nameless throng that is called ' popu lation,' they went all different ways. Some went to be ' shop-girls ' on very small wages. Some went to be clerk3 in offices, type-writers and such things. Some went out as ' generals ' or ' do niestica,' and they, it seemed to me, were the wise ones. Others stayed home, played the fine lady, lived on their parents, and went to the devil. The latter were of the type that would be admitted to the ball at our little coast town, while the respectable ' domestic ' would be debarred. But you can't help that. I used to buck against it, and try to reform the world, but it's too big an order ! I've let it alone now, and, between you and me, gossips, I don't think it's much the worse. But here's the. rub. If I went into an office and met the girl who'd set out to serv...
