LIVESTOCK LOS8ES. IN SOUTH AFRICA. 'The Farmers Journal,' published at Kenya, discussing the latest statis tics of pastoral and agricultural pro duction in South Africa, tells us: — A table sets forth' the Union livestock losses and the estimated value of crops destroyed by hail during the year May, 1921, to April, 1922. During that period 308,883 cattle died from disease and drought in the Union, the Provincial quotas being;. Transvaal, 92,321; Free State, 81,349; Cape, 78,658 ; Natal, 56,ooo. A total of 2.579,186 sheep and goats died in the Union from disease and drought. The estimated value of crops des troyed by hail in the Union during the period was £867,353 namely, £414,626 in the Transvaal; £242,537 in the Free State; £108,406 in the Cape; and £101,784 in Natal.

Despite the inclemency of the weather about 200 persons, wool samplers, friends and families, embarked from Fort Mac quarie on the 'S.S. King Edward', at 9.30 a.m. Music was rendered by the orcnestra on board. POTATO DISEASES. FARMER'S FEATS. Western district farmers have been complaining against blight-infected potatoes being allowed to be Imported £rqm Victoria and Tasmania. Pro test was made by Mr. J. C. L. Fitz patrick, M.L.A., to the Minister for Agriculture, on behalf of western grow ers, with the result that more rigid examination was ordered. ? The Minister states that tho officer in charge reports that potatoes arriv ing from Tasmania and Victoria this season have shown' Blight indications of Irish blight. Althoughit was found necessary to condemn many consign ments, they were not badly infected, and tney were allowed to be picked over under supervision, and the infected potatoes were destroyed.
