Original Correspondence. SHOALHAVEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 3 August 1867

SHOALHAYEN. (from our correspondent.) July 23.—I am happy in reporting that " a change has come over the spirit of our dream" in regard to the weather, which is at the date of writing very favorable for farming; operations. The maize may be said to be gleaned, and preparations are , being -made for cereals other than j wheat, .the latter having of late years been so very unproductive from various causes, many have relinquished the task of another trial, the more especially upon " rented" lands. The policy of this remains to be proved by another year of toil, which it is hoped will be rewarded' with a plenteous season. Yours of the 6th to hand yesterday. The irregularity has been so frequent of late in delivery here, that we sometimes give up the idea of seeing your paper " until it comes." How sarong a period elapses between Na\x=req-\ rira and Bega is strange, considering that it takes but a day to post from Sydney to here. 4 Ruffianism.—The other day characters of the most diaboli...

A CASE OF BREACH OF PROMISE, IN MELBOURNE. At the City Court on Wednesday James Ryan and Mary Grleison were charged with insulting behaviour. Mr. W. Smith, an official at the Spencer- j street railway station, stated that about six o'clock in the morning the prisoners J were on the railway platform, behaving in a very disorderly maimer. The woma^ caught the man by the beard, and asked him if he was not going to. marry her at i " nine o'clock in the morning," a demand ; with which be refused to comply. She then charged him with robbing her of £150, and on both parties being taken to the watch house, about £149 10s was found in the man's possession. Both prisoners were now discharged on the charge of insulting behaviour, and Ryan was accused by the woman of stealing £155 from her. The prosecutrix stated that she was now in service in Melbourne, having recently arrived frem Adelaide, where she resided for eight years. For two or three years she paid small slims of money into the bank, ...

ORIGINAL POETRY. WHERE AM I GOING AT LAST. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 3 August 1867

ORIGINAL POETRY. # WHERE AM I GOING AT LAST. Dying, dying, dying; Can no one a ransom pay; Uymg, dying, dying ; Oh, lor another day. Shrieking and gasping for breath, In agony clenching the hand, Down through *be valley of death, Into the unknown laud. Into the world unknown, Where the spirits of all unite, By the way we must travel alone, That spirit has taken its flight. Dying, dying, dying Can no one a ransom pay; Dying, dying, dying; Ob, lor a moment's delay. Oh, for the hours that are past, Oh, for the days gone by, Oh, U-od, have I come to the last, Is it now that I must die. Oh, why am I called away, And never a warning sent; And its all too late to pray, Too late, too late to repent. Dying, dying, dying; Can 110 one a ransom pay ; Dying, dying, dying; Bipe for the judgment day. Oil, why did I turn aside From the narrow path and straight, And follow the road to hell, Down to the very gate. Oh, whj did I never try To conquer the fiend within; Why did I linger, why, In the temp...
