UP THE MOUNTAIN. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 21 January 1892

U! TZZE XO=UTA. - t (8o0 OUR OWN CORWFSPOSDEiT.) OnE of our many merry meetings came off on Friday. the 18th ult., at the saw-mill, when employers and employes met for a social farewell meeting, before parting for the holidays. Mr. Bryant, who was voted to the chair, made a few appropriate re marks, dwelling upon the good feeling that existed between all con:erned in the works, hoping they would spend as happy a Christ mas as he expected to have with his friends. Re then called on Mr. Wightman, who stated that it was always an Englishman's pride that he was at all times ready to do his duty, and he (Mr. Wightman) wouhld therefore try and do what little hle could towards their enjoyment that evening. Be fore doingso, he wouldlike to say that he was glad to see the heartyj'good feeling which existed between them all, and whilst they had the entire conidence of those em- i ployed at the mill, it was sure to turn out a success; but as he preferredj working to speech-making, he wouhl con...

WITH WHICHI ISCORPORATED PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY. THURSDAY, JANUARY .1, 189l . TIEE STOCK TAZ. THERE is no mistaking tile trend of public opinion in the farming districts, particularly in the rangy country, on this important question. The explicit declaration of the Hon. ALLAH ?M'LEAN, the present Minister of Lands, who has always been foremost in his advocacy of equal justice for the grazier and farmer, will give strength to the movement. All over Gippsland resolutions are being passed on the subject, and we at this side of the Divide, if we are alive to our own interests, will concentrate our energies on this important question, and second the efforts of those who have been so long struggling to get protection for the only class who are left out in the cold in this highly-protected country. The facts and figures published in the Age and Leader of Saturday last will tend to open the eyes of the people of this colony to the absurdity of sub mitting our farmers and graziers to an un...

HOLIDAY AMUSEMENTS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 21 January 1892

HOLIDAY AMUSEMENTS. TO TIE EDITOR OF THE CIflONICLE. SmI,-A French cynic has said that art Englishman's first exclamation on rising is, " What a glorious morning! Let us go and kill something." And the same thing may be said of a large section of the Australian youth, in whom the itch for killing some. thing is a strongly marked characteristic. Simultaneously with the arrival of the holi days a number of young men, armed with shot-guns, appear in the neighborhood of Flowerdale, and pnceeed to maim and destroy the inoffensive denizens of the bush. The native hear-most harnless of God's creatures-being very tenacious of life, is the favorite game of these s orismen. When one of these creatures is sighted, half-a dozen gnos are levelled and discharged, and the appearance of agony which the bear presents as, with hlodl-dripping limbs andt protruding bowels, it loks helplessly down on its merciless torturers, is prodlctive of muchl amusement, which reches its ncl na. when the animal, wei...

MR. STEUART IN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 21 January 1892

MR. STEUART IN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOS O TUE CHIRONICLE. Sn,--In reading over the reports of the Yea Shire Council, I see that the President stated to the Council that the Contract book was the only one correctly kept, and that the fact of its being so, was that he had kept it." Now, Sir, that book was kept solely by mea and.tte bootkis.thte,-,lvasc-pea - --- --- -. for itself. The Petty Cash-book was laid as well as all others before the Auditors, has been checked by them, and is there to show for itself. There were also several statements made, which I asked leave to reply to, stsl which I could have shown as to their corrdct. ness or otherwise, but such leave has never been accorded me. Last Saturday the Rate-collector stated that his inability to collect the rates was owing to the late Secretary. On hea-ing this I wrote a letter totally denyingit, and handed it to the President to read, in reply to the Rate-collector's statement, but he failed to do so. The above will show th...

zEWa AND mIOTZI. MR. i. K. .M'KENZIE, of Reedy Creek, met a number of his friends and supporters at Yea on Tuesday night, when it was ar ranged that he should deliver an address at the Shire Hall on Friday, the 29th inst. (to-morrow week). We are informed that our King Parrot Creek correspondent wasn in error in stating last week that the residents of Spring Valley had decided to throw in their lot with the Broadford Dairy Company. Mr. E. S. Purcell, who has devoted a great deal of time to pushing on the Yea Dairy Com pany, drove out, and after explaining fully the position of the 'company, and the ad vantages to be derived by the Creameries connected with it, 500 shares were taken up, and since then £60 has been. subscribed. With one or two more Creameries at work up the Yea River and at Homewood, we should be in as good a position as any dis trict in the colony to profitably work a central Butter Factory.
