CHAPTER II. The Old, Old Trystlng Tree. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 July 1914

CHAPTER II. The Old, Old Trystlng Tree. Old Nell Galbraitli had fallen on sleep, listening to the crooning song of his wife, Jean. It seemed as if, at the last moment, the storm fiend had relented, and had kissed the lips into a smile. But for Jean Galbraith it was the beginning of a long dark ness that would never lift till tlu world's Saturday night of toll shoul.' usher in tho Sabbath morning o! eternal rest. nut she had her two boys left, An gus and Lric, and after the funeral they comforted her, Baying with sobs "Dinna greet, mother, you've us twn left." The skipper of the "Guide Me" sat at his wheel peering through the thick smur of blinding snow. The howling tempest hid all sight of land, and 110 tog-siren, however lusty, could be heard amid the crash and roar of the elements. Vet in truth, old Neil Ualbraith, skipper and owner of. this stout "zulu" fishing boat, was many leagues from friendly harbor, tossing and heaving and scudding along in the welter of the raging North Sea, stirred to fury by the winds ill' their fierce sweep across from Norway's crags and uplands. Huge waves, green and angry, de luged the little boat as she bored her nose into every mountain wall of water, and, to save himself, the old_ man at the wheel bad lashed him-' self to his seat with many cords. One of the crew of seven had already been washed overboard, for the s...

THE HIGHEST TALENT. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 July 1914

the highest talent. The Friends, or Quakers, f»s sro commonly called, attach a pecu liar significance to the word weight To say of a man In their communi ties that he has, or that lie lacks, , weight, is to express a kind of fl"aJ I judgment upon him. This usage ot the word involves a recognition & certain authority which attaches to the judgmont and example of some people, and which the example a,u judgment of other people do not carry with them. There are a great many men and women who are exemplary and have charming gifts, hut who do not make their- mark on their asso ciates. They interest and entertain, hut they do not deeply influence those about them. It .Is a pleasure to meet them, and. agreeable, things are al ways Said about-thenf; but theyr nei | ther stimulate nor mould opinion. In j 8Uch cases the charm generally re sides in temperament, while the source of influence is character. There are a great many delightful talkers, for instance, who speak out of the mood ...

Rheumatism, gout, lumbago, sciatica, neuralgia, blood disorders, anaemia, indigestion, biliousness, sick-headache, general debility, gravel, stone and bladder troubles are complaints which afflict many of us, and which are gene rally caused by retention of uric and biliary poisons in the system owing (o defective action of the kidneys and liver, and which would disappear if the kidneys and liver properly per formed their functions. I've been handling tea since 1 was a boy—of course 1 always say my own's the best—perhaps it is and perhaps it isn't—anyhow it's the best for me to sell. Putting aside personal interests, I find a lot of pleasure in selling tea, and when I can't scli my own, 1 don't mind selling any of the packed teas—the thing that annoys me most in business is for a ctiitomer to buy groceries fiom me and tea from somebody else I'm not going to blow about the quality of my own tea, but I'll swear it isn't possible for any house-to-house canvasser to sell tea equal to Robur, for the same money—he couldn't do it, and make enough to keep himself in shoe leather, let alone tucker—I suppose you wonder when theie's not much profit on "Robur" why I sell it— well, you see it's like this, if 1 didn't sell it my customers might go to another shop and the chances are they'd buy their other groceries there too, and I'd rather sell an article for no profit than lose a customer. j Talking about Robur, there's ne...
