Upper Thornton. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 October 1909

Upper Thornton. (From Our Correspondent.) 'Well, we are sorry," was the household word of all the residents of Je.-Malem Creek, Upper Thornton and Darlingford on Wednesday of last week when the news spread round that their highly esteemed and popular teacher, Mr Woodhouse, had received very short notifie?tion of a removal to Baddaginnie, where he was to take up his duties on the Monday follow. Wr Woodhouse has gained quite an army of friends about the district during his two years amangst them, and his loss is keenly felt. Not only in his capacity as a teacher, which was first-class, Mr Woodhouse had high credentials as a veterinary surgeon and was ever willing-to render his services in that direction at all times. In the sporting world. George was always there, and latterly took a keen interest an the Darlingford Football Club, being a strong supporter and barracker, and was one of the promoters of his team's visit to Alex andra to take on the premiers of the asso. ciation, and was...

RAILWAY AGITATION REMINISCENCES. "A FORTY YEARS' WAR." AN INTERESTING EPITOME. (No. 3). [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 October 1909

'RAILWAY AGITATION REMINISCENCES. "A FORTY YEARS' WAR." AN INTERESTING EPITOME. (No. 3). An ,amusing little episode which oc. curred on this memorable occasion may not be out of place in these reminiscences, or rather records of work done to obtain justice to the shire. The leader-who. of course, on all occasions was Councillor Wheeler (who, we hope will not be offended at the narrative)--and one of his colleagues deemed it necessary to make a journey of about 200 miles into Gippsland in order to hunt up a couple of strong Parliamentary supporters whose Influence carried great weight at the time. They arrived in good time for the evening express at Princes Bridge station, and having expended two pennies of their deputation money in the purchase of the evening paper, duly ensconced themselves in a smoker, one on either side of the compartment next the door. Unfortu nately the train was a full one. Each passenger who got into that department had either to negotiate their leader's leg,...

Alexandra P. and A. Association. SHEEP DOG TRIALS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 October 1909

Alexandra P. and A. Association. SHEEP DOG TRIALS. The annual sheep dog trials of the above association were held at the show ground, on Saturday afternoon last. The weather was most unfavorable, cold and heavy showers falling at intervals, which was the means of keeping a number of people away. However, there was a very fair attendance, and a good after noon's sport was seen. Last year the trials were held in conjunction with another event and were poorly patronised, but now that the trials are a day's sport in themselves they will, no doubt, be well patronised each year. A good number of entries worn received in the three events, and sonme of the dogs shaped exceptionally well, and showed that they had received an excellent schooling in that particular class of work. Several of the dogs worked well out in the centre of the oval and ran the sheep between the fences in first rate style, but on approaching the yard they beramo frightened of the people and their atten tion was taken o...

* Correspondence. We do not hold oniselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.] THE ALEXANDRA RAILWAY. :" 'TO THE -EDITOR OF THE fSTANDARD. BSn.-What is " Thu Cadc" (writing in your last isaue).siming at! Does he object to all the " guzzling and gorging" he pro. ;dicts at the forthcoming opening of our rail way? If so, why doe l he not say so, and formulate a schema for the entertaining of the many old-timers (all of whom I expect :to meet) and others. If all and sundry re turn to Melbourne the same day, as the opening, then I predict a very short enter tainment and very little "'guzzling and gorging." Will "Tihe Cadl" fall in with this proposition! Let 'the opening of the railway take the form of a public demon. stration during the day, with a grand ban quet at night. In the afternoon the people could be convoyed, free of charge , to Lily, where a picnic and sports might be held in honor. This to take place immediately after the forcmal opening, all "speec...

iqxnandnt &t gqa @ mt daid PUBLLSTIED EVERY FRIDAY. EC TXMSERE NZC TsiMIDE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1909. The omany residents of this district who were fortunate enough to have seen the Aurora Australis on Saturday night will ever remember the magnificent spectacle that met their gaze in the sky, whilst those who retired early for the night will regret not having witnessed the glorious sight. At 11 o'clock, the first reflection was seen to appear on the horizon in the south, despite the fact that it was a very bright moonlight night. It then moved round to the south-east and at short intervals-from 11 p.m. to 1 a.,m. huge flashes of brilliant lights showing all the colors imaginable, travelled across the heavens from the south-east to the north-west just like the bursting of one long endless cloud. At times the flashes made the surroundings appear brighter than day, and had the night been dark the sight would have been too beautiful to describe. A dull rumbling noise like that of ...

HAILWAY.. TAVELTINhO. TO TlI EDITOR OF TI 1T'ANDJlIRD. Smi.-The half.hour wait (both ways) at the Yea railway station is enough to break up any traveller. Why this deoay i The sooner this nonscnrse is reduced to lesa than 15 minutes the better. At Moleaworth, too, the wait is nothing short of delay.
