A HINT TO THE VOLUNTEERS. To the Editor of the South Bourke Standard. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 1 August 1862

-0 A HINT TO THE VOLUNTEERS. To the Edlitor of the South Bourle Standard. lMR. EDITol,-Don't you think that the lHawthorn and Kew Volunteers are a very ungallant body of men ? Our spacious Town Hall has now been com pleted a long time, and as yet they have not had the o )rtesy to invite the ladies to a ball. If such a novelty were to take place in Hawthorn, I lprophesy it would bo a great success. Besides, the advantages that might accrue to the corps would be numerous. ,Through the inlluenco of the ladles Drill Instructor loudd would prolably get a goodly muster of re cruits, a considerable sum would be added to the flinnces of the company ; and such things as silver lugles, prizes offered by the ladies for, &c., are not unknown in other companies, whoso members cer. tainly cannot have neglected the ladies so much as the lawthorn and Kew Rifles. I remain, lAr. Eiditor, yours, CRINOLINE. II twthorn, Thursday morning.

rijc ýoutj J30Ol'hl Statctratl.r IIDAY, A.UGUST 1is, 1802. Tu.t noble response made to the Lancashire Relieif unud by the people of 'Melbourne errnot fail to have its effect on other towns iii the colony. Already Ballarat has given liberally, and some other places have fol lowed its example; so that the next mail is likely to carry home a large supple ment to the amount previously forwarded. But still there are many places where no organised arrangements have been made for collecting subscriptions, and to those places it would be well for the gentlemen form ing the committee to direct their atten tion. Every resident in every township and village in Victoria should have an op portunity of testifying his sympathy with the deep distress of these JIancashiro weavers, whose suffebrings have not been brought on by any act of their own, but have been entailed upon them. by the na tion's respect for international law.
