Jottings. FOR DAIRYMEN PRINCIPALLY. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 May 1915

Jottings. FOR DAIRYMEN PRINCIPALLY. By F. J. Madden, Dairy Inspector, Department of Public Health, N.S.W. Success is perched high on the hilltop, in their climb to which dairymen undoubt edly meet with many obstacles, but good cows and similar methods make the climb fairly easy. # Though feed may be plentiful and cost of production small, don't let it influence you to keep "scrubbers." * * * The breed you fancy is the breed to have. v5* Progressive dairymen don't drift; they steer a direct course by the compass of good judgment. » * * Kindness and patience are like cleanli ness-indispensable on the dairv farm. # Patience is the virtue most needed when training your heifers; it stands between breaking-in and breaking-up. It requires patience to teach the "pod dies" to drink, but the cheque they bring now and again is not hard to take. * » ' » Some take up farming as a hobby, some for the benefit of the outdoor life, but whatever the reason, the money-making aspect looms large. * - - ...

HELP POSTCARDS. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 May 1915

HELP POSTCARDS. Postcards are available at the Lands Office for use of settlers. These cards are to be used by them in calling in the services of an instructor. It is to be hoped that this innovation will prove of value to settlers. In a settlement such as we now have, with something like 900 settlers needing attention, and many new men constantly arriving on the look-out for land, and seeking advice prior to ap plying for a block, the Commissioner's in structors have very little time at their dis posal for actual house-to-house calling on settlers, but they are at all times available to the man who actually wants them, and one of these postcards sent to the Mana ger will bring an inspector on to the set tler's farm at the earliest possible moment. Several cases have come under the notice of the Lands Settlement Office where stock have been ailing, and have received some crude and often unsatisfactory treatment at the hands of the owners or their anxious-to-assist neighbors. An ap p...

THE SAME OLD STORY. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 May 1915

THE SAME OLD STORY, " When the Reclamation Act was pend ing in 1902 many eastern financiers and .publicists vigorously protested against its passage. They regarded it as a perilous departure in government. They prophe sied a series of disastrous results. They designated it a most obnoxious Socialistic experiment. But there has been a sur prising change since then in this respect. The voice of criticism has become small. It failed to grow strident once more, even when it leaked out some time ago that the reclamation service had not wholly lived up to its opportunities and promises. The cause of this remarkable turn in thought lies close at hand. It can be detected in the general knowledge throughout the country of the marvellous good that the building of irrigation sys tems has already accomplished." The above extract from the U.S.A. " Reclamation Record" might have been penned by an Australian journalist in regard' to irrigation in any of the eastern States of Australia. Our own sch...

The Town Plan of Leeton. [In the following article, which Mr. W. Burley Griffin, who has designed the townships of Leeton and Griffith, has been good enough to write, showing what he had in mind in preparing the design of Leeton, it is to be understood that although the present tense has been used in places, as though certain things were already accomplished, the writer has in reality looked at the matter from the future standpoint, and simply written of the town as he can see it in his mind's eye, when the wealth and prosperity of the Areas shall have warranted the carrying out of the magnificent conceptions he has in prospect.—Editor.] [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 May 1915

Cow Bails and Milking Yards. (Continued from last issue.) [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 May 1915

Cow Bails and Milking Yards. (Continued from last issue.) Plan 4 shows the Boyce Echelon Milk ing Stall. This plan gives a shed of eight stalls suitable for milking machines and similar to the premises erected by Mr. M. A. 0!Callaghan on his farm. The Boyce stall is a patent, and anyone proposing to use this style of milking shed must apply to the patentee, and pay the royalty re quired. This style of milking shed ^has come into considerable favor amongst coastal dairymen. It is contended for them that the cows can be handled more easily and cheaply than by any other system of cow bails. To settlers intend ing to go in for Echelon stalls, special at tention is directed to the all-iron sheds and milking-room. There are several of these sheds on the Areas, but perhaps the best example is that of the Dairy Expert, Mr. M. A. O'Gallaghan, already referred to. *A photograph of that dairyman's ' premises is published with this article. Mr. M. A. O'CaUaghan's Dairy. For settlers who are con...

RAINFALL AT YANCO. Comparison of the Last Two Tears. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 May 1915

RAINFALL AT YANCO. Comparison of the Last Two Tears. The year 1913-14 was much drier than the average, but the rainfall, although only 12 inches, was copious when com pared with the precipitation during the year 1914-15. As a matter of fact, the total of the two years together is only as much as is usually received in an ordin ary year. The figures given hereunder have been taken from the records of the Yanco Experiment Farm to June, 1914, after which they are the readings of the official record at Leeton. r ' ' ^ 1913-14. 1914-15.
