NARnLY three months have pseoed since the murders were committed by the Kflly gang, and making every allowance for ihe difficulties the police have had to contend with, still we must say there is something radically wrong in the administration of that branch of the publio service. We are informed that no less a number than two hundred and fifty well armed men are out in this district with the view of arresting four desperate murderers, and yet week after week pssese away and they are no nearer their oljeor. If, as many contehld, Captain Standish is unfit for the posi tion that he holds, by all moans let some oiher man of energy and courage take his place, for should the present nnsatislactory state of affairs continue much longer the natural conclusion to which all must come is, that the Vic torian police force is simply an expen sive farce, and will remain a standing disgrace...

A NEW BANK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 January 1879

ý:A NEW BANK. ---C- ROlt Tuit ARGous o JANUARY 4, 1879. A meeting was convened at Scott's Hotel yesterday afternoon by Mr Thos. Cornish. for the purpose of considering the desirability of oarablishing a new bank, to be called the Australian Gold and Estate Bank' The attendance was but small. Mr Mount was voted to the Sohir. SMr Thos. Cornish explained that the object of the bank was to aid in the development of mining, farming, and manufactoriaes in a more practical and --systematic manner than had hitherto been done, or could be done by the ordinary banking institutions or by individual enterprise. This bank would give much longer profits than ordinary banks, as the profits would not only arise from ordinary banking business, but there would also be the percentage on the gross yield of gold from mines supplied with machinery by the bank. There would also be the profit on the ,purobase of suoh gold raised by that maohinery at a fixed price, and by Issuing notes for financing proport...
