Matrimonial Mirror . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1907

Matrimonial Mirror . By R . M . Cray croft . Marriage is often a failure because there are too many home truths in it , and not enough jolly . No human being ever has the slightest conception how many faults he or she possesses until after they are married and are privileged to have their shortcomr lugs pointed out to thorn by a husband or a wife . In the outside world it is the polite custom of society , at least in our presence , to gloss over our weaknesses and magnify our virtues . In the family circle the opposite rule prevails . Our good qualities are accepted without comment , and it is our mistakes and frailties that come in for notice . This Is the greatest disappointment of matrimony and the thing that does more than all else to take the salt and savor out of married life . What we . really marry for is to get somebody to admire us—to bind somebody to us who will always be giving us the glad hand , to secure a perpetual incense burner who cannot get away from us and will n...

womffth ^ J ^ fcs , * , „ >/ = i 3 G * * all fa «* m » Mr * . Margaret J . Blair . - Mr * . Margaret J . Blair . CURTAINS . A clever woman who has studied the art of house decoration , says : The beauty of a room depends chiefly upon its openings ; to-conceal these is to hide the key to the whole decorative scheme . Tliis applies with equal force to windows and doors , and the tendency of modern decoration is a reaction from concealing these openings with voluminous , stuffy draperies toward beautifying them with appropriate treatment . Window Curtains . It is interesting to note that what is today an insanitary nuisance , the door drapery , was when first used an absolute necessity . Their use originated with the use ofsliding doors in houses and was designed to protect the room and its occupants from draughts . In most houses of today this is still a perfectly legitimate purpose for them to serve , since house-building is not brought to that state of perfection which ab...

" ^ BY EDITH y & T RAYMOND . ¦ ¦¦ [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1907

^ BY EDITH y & T RAYMOND . ¦ ¦¦ A Bunch of Arbutus . My Dear Young Folks : . As I read vour letters telling of walks in the woods and the meadows , picking great bunches of wild flowers for your teacher or your mother , 1 imagined I was with you , tossing the dead leaves from the pretty pink and white arbutus , inhaling the delicious woodsy odors , and gathering the violets , buttercups , anemones and all the other bright fragrant blossoms that make this old world of ouis so beautiful after the ice and snow of the cold . winter is . past . The violet was the favorite flower with nearly everyone , but some of you seemed as bewildered as 1 am , when I gather flowers , and thought each one was the best , because it had some special beautv or characteristic of its own . Examine the flowers very closely this spring and summer and perhaps we may have another contest next year , which will be even better than this . One of the girls didnt know whether the white clover was a flo...

Table Talk . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1907

Table Talk . Kectpes . APPLE DUMPLINGS . Almost all men like apple dumplings , but few women can make good ones . Try this recipe : 4 pints of Hour ; a pinch of salt ; 4 rounding leaspoonfuls of baking powder ; mix with just enough sweet milk to make a soft dough ; have apples pared , halved and cored ; put the dough as soft as can be handled nicely around applca and steam 30 minutes , seeing that the water never stops boiling briskly . This makes 5 large dumplings . The steamer should be large enough to allow . the steam to come up around them and the lid should-fit tightly . A good substitute for cream is a sauce . Make a quart of starch with flour and water , have it about the consistency of rich cream and season with sugar , butter and any flavoring desired , nutmeg is nice . —Mary L . B „ Ohio . BEEF LOAF . 2 eggs ; 1 cup rolled crackers ; 1 small teaspoon pepper ; 1 small teaspoon salt ; iy « lbs . chopped lean steak . Mix and mold in a loaf , spread bits of butter on top and ...
