Ensilage Crops for the Dairy . Those who contemp late growing ensilage mnrt consider the matter now , as corn is ^ the onlv irreen food that may be conned into ensilage . On some farms where cabbages are easily grown and * hioh cannot be profitably marketed , ihev serve the same purpose as ensilage in many respects , which is the furnishing f ™ tnnnlv of green food in winter . Nor hit expe ^ siveleeding , as 4 , 000 heads of cabbage may be grown on an acre with horse culture , and allowing two cabbages ner day to each cow , enough can be Sown for twenty cows three months The cabbages are not fed with a view of making thlm a part of the regular ration but as a changef rom the ordinary dry fare and they assist in promoting health and increasing the flow of milk . A full-grown animal is said to consume about four bushels of ensilage , but some do not appropriate more than two , though the inantitr allowed depends upon the amount of other food given . Estimating upon this basis the farm...

9 HK 3 NM [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 3 April 1886

9 HK 3 NM Poultry Houses in Summer . If possible an open shed is better for the hens in summer than a more expensive poultry house . The front can be closed at night with a door made of wire netting , which will allow of a free admission of air . as well as affording security from owls or other midnight depredators . Fowls are very partial to outdoor enjoyment , both during the day and night . They would willingly roost on the trees if permitted to do so , and only retire to the close poultry house for security as well as protection from the weather . But while exposure to the open air is beneficial , yet nothing is more injurious than draughts of air or dampness . If an open shed is properly constructed it may also be made to serve for winter quarters , by closing the front as the season changes . Setting the Hens . Do not set hens out of doors , on the ground , until the nights as well as the days are warm . Then thirteen eggs may be given , and will be well covered by a good size...

APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 3 April 1886

APIARY . Preventing Robbery of Hives . If a colony is weak , the stronger colonies will rob it . This may be prevented , however , by care . It is well known that when the entrance is large enough the stronger colony will attack the weaker one in large force , rushing into the hive in such numbers as to overpower the inmates , and in a short time all the honey will be carried off . All colonies have guards at the entrances of the hives , who examine every bee that attempts to pass in . These guards are relieved about every three hours , and they do nothing but attend the entrance . If the entrance is large the task is more difficult , and the guards cannot give the alarm soon enough to prevent capture by a stronger colony . If , however , a strip be fastened over the entrance , and a space be left only large enough for a single bee to pass in and out , the guards will beat back the attacking party in detail and prevent any number of the enemy from entering . If the colony has been d...
