THE EDUCATION OF MECHANICS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1879

THE EDUCATION OF MECHANICS . . ^ | | | H AT EDUCATION is unfavorable to labor , was an old de- * $ ! ral lusion which , in these days of advancement , has nearly passed away . To-day we see them hand in hand traveling the same path— each dependent upon the other . It is best that the alliance has been formed . A person possessing a liberal education and not applying it to some practical art , by which he may benefit mankind , and add a link to the cable with which the educated have to drag along the chariot containing the uneducated , in the grand forward march of learning , is not performing one of the first duties that every being owes to the world . And , also , a purely practical man who knows not tv / iy he does anything a certain way , is nothing better than a machine . It is the latter class that most claims our attention . How many of the journeymen in our machine shops have at least a common-school education , to say nothing of a mechanical education ? Go through the shops ...

LETTER FROM PROF . F . A . MARSH . TO THE I . I . U , SPELLING REFORM ASSOCIATION . * * * * * - ? sl ^ jil 0 u lav mat e A grand start . I do not se how it could be betSi ^ P tered . The Industrial University is certainly the banner institution , and must do great things to keep the promise she givs . You should publish yourselvs so as to attract the attention of teachers . The Educational Weekly of Chicago , the New England Journal of Education , and the like , wil gladly print accounts of your doings . So also wil some of the great newspapers . But , best of all , resolv that every member write to some newspaper publisht in his own town or near neighborhood , and tel about the Association at the University . Can you not prepare petitions like the inclosed and induce some member of Congress to present it on your separate behalf , and so some members of your State Legislature ? Can you not send a delegate to the State Teacher s Association , and urge that body to send petitions to t...

OUR MILITARY DEPARTMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1879

OUR MILITARY DEPARTMENT . ^ HN THE YEAR 1 S 62 , during one . of the darkest periods in ? fcif § r the history of our country , Congress , seeing the necessity of having men who , combining a good college education with that of a military one , would be best able , if necessity demanded , to take command of the volunteer forces of the country , passed the memorable acts , granting certain tracts of land to each state , for the establishment of Universities whose aim it should be to teach studies requisite for such an education . The grant , amounting in this State to 4 80 , 000 acres , having been accepted , the University was chartered in February 1 S 67 , and publicly opened and inaugurated in March 1868 . The recent act of the Legislature requires that all male students shall take part in the military drill unless exempted by physical disaabilitv . That they shall wear the University uniform after the first term ; the University cap to be worn from the first . This uniform consis...

EDUCATION . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1879

EDUCATION . •wfjflflfAN IS composed of three parts , body , m nd and soul . These fM gP are all necessary and mutually dependent . Body is the foundation , the living substance wherein mind and soul are mysteriously confined . Mind is the acting and regulating agency through whose processes the body is preserved , the mind itself developed , and the destiny of the soul decided . Soul is the grand idea in the creation of the whole , without which man would be an anomoly and life a mere farce . Soul is more important than mind and body , because it lives after mind and body cease . The heart or moral nature of man is closely connected with mind because by mental processes it is made better or worse : with soul because the destiny of the soul depends upon its status . True education consists in the harmonious development of body , mind and heart . That these ought to be developed , is proved by their existence , mutual dependence , and good effects , when properly developed , upon the ...

of THE DETHRONEMENT OF JAMES II . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1879

of THE DETHRONEMENT OF JAMES II . •< i ^ lil HE SPECTACLE a king dethroning himself , leaving his ^•HH kingdom and fleeing from his subjects , is an uncommon one in the historical scenes of the past . Not the least memorable of those that have occurred , is the dethronement and flight of James II from the English throne in the year 16 S 8 . On account of the peculiar circumstances attending this dethronement , it forms one of the most prominent events of English history . James II had ascended the throne in 1685 , perhaps with the respect due to a king , yet with the misgivings of the nation . He was a catholic , and it was only a few years before , that the lying Oates had appeared on the witness stand with his hideous romance , the Catholic Plot . The nation had believed so implicitly in this plot , which they supposed had been invented for the purpose of taking the life of the king , Charles II , that they accepted the most incredible stories , as the most convincing e...
