SOME HOUSECLEANING PRELIMINARIES .-II . Benzine sprayed into every crack and crevice will exterminate the fleas in your house . Do this when there are no fires , and no light or fire must be in the room for several hours . Air the house very thoroughly . Bedbugs—! ! Invest in sulphur and eternal carefulness . Pull your bed apart , sun the mattress and air the pillows every week while you suspect the foe and every month when you begin to breathe again . The proper mode of procedure is to spend several pounds of preventions , i . e ., sul- . phur , to fumigate every house before moving in ; if not a renter , to fumigate all goods you may have stored in a storageroom while on a vacation ; to look out for bugs brought even by your best friends , your honored guests , your luckless husband ; your hired servants or by the little children who have been visiting some very nice people . Very nice people sometimes have a skeleton in their chests and shiver at the mere name of— bugs . As soon ...

ADVANTAGES OF FARM LIFE . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 16 April 1896

ADVANTAGES OF FARM LIFE . [ HAVE just finished reading Winter L Evenings in a late number by a Nebraska boy , and I deem the article worthy of a place in every home paper in the country . I did not suppose that some old-fashioned crank had written it , but confess that I was surprised when the boy told us his age . Here is wisdom without age and experience , and here is the kind of boys and girls the farms are bringing to the front every year . ^ Success is stamped upon every line oif the article . And now , boys and girls of the farni homes of Illinois and other states , do not let this one of Nebraska out-do you . Remember , there is just as much rqom . to grow here as there . Do not join the vast army of I cant . If ydu belong to it , withdraw at once . You can do all you will . I would like to give you a bit of personal experience in confirmation , but will forbear , at present . If no one will join a reading circle or literary society with you , take up a course of reading alon...

; BIG STOMACHS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 16 April 1896

; BIG STOMACHS . One of the inost frequent aiid least curable forms of so-called dyspepsia / is an enlarged stomach . Let us briefly consider the position of this organ in the body and its relation to other vitkl parts which may be ^ -nay , often are—affected by the enlargement suggested . The stomach is located below the chest , in the abdomen just under the diaphrain , or striff en , as it is called in ; cattle . The large end of the stomach is on the left Side of the body resting against the spleen : the small end at the right side , near the livery the middle portion above the bowels . With these positions in mind we can the better understand how an enlarged stomach may give . rise to very serious symptoms indeed . The cause of enlargement is most fre quently improper method of feeding , beginning in early childhood . The nursing bottle is responsible for the beginning of the trouble in mainy cases , by compelling the infant to swallow large quantities of air while sucking the m...

CLEANING HOUSE . I do not believe in cleaning house too early ; but on the other hand I dont believe in letting it go till Fourth of July is peeping around the corner and the small boy is making day and night hide ous by firecrackers and torpedo , likely to burn my nice curtains or carpets to ashes when Ive put them out on the backyardsfence to air . No , I clean my house in due season ,- which nieans the last of May and October , when ho sensible fly is abroad , in asny great number at least . Our Young Poles- Corner [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 16 April 1896

Our Young Poles- Corner WONDERFUL . Isnt it wonderful , when you think , How the creeping grasses grow , High on the mountain s rocky brink , In the valleys down below ? A common thing is a grass blade small , Crushed by the feet that passBut all the dwarfs and giants tall , Working till doomsday-shadows fall , Cant make a blade of grass . Isnt it wonderful , when you think , How a little seed asleep , Out of the earth new life will drink , And carefully upward creep ?—- A seed , we say , is a simple thing , ¦ ¦ The germ of a flower or weed—But all earth s workmen , laboring , With all the help that wealth could bring Never could make a seed . Isnt it wonderful , when you think , y How the wild bird sings his song , Weaving melodies , . link , by link , . The whole sweet summer long ? Commonplace is a bird , alway , Everywhere seen and beardBut all the engines of earth , I say , Working on till the Judgment Day , Never could make a bird . Isnt it wonderful , when you think , How a l...

By E 06 Aa ia . V ^ VK , ^ l ^\ l « We are Ten Travelers . There is the Merry Traveler , the Mt / fose Traveler , the Clerical Traveler , the Gipsy Traveler , the Chronic Traveler , the Casual Traveler , the Student Traveler , the Aimless Traveler ; the Commercial Traveler , the Vagabond Traveler .. How we came to know each other is no matter . We meet at . times at my own apartments in a quaint old inn , beside a cavernous , fireplace , into which countless now sightless eyes have for centuries peered , and in a pleasant way we re-live our pilgrimings ^ or recount those romances of others which have touched our hearts and tarried there . In this old room , with its brown rafters , decrepit floor and little , high dormer windows , like the portholes of an old frigate , we seem to become almost one in this kindly companionship . We are so much one that when my guests have departed I sit here by the , old fireplace , where friendly . voices and presences linger , and set down as best ...

ALLEGBp FUN [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 16 April 1896

ALLEGBp FUN STORY ABOUT THE SULTAN . Why does the sultan allow what was once a respectable . fleet to rot to pieces aLnchored off Stambbul ? Simply because he considers an ironclad a dangerous instrunient in the hands of any minister or resolute commander , says the London Standard . It is true that there are no ships to guard his coasts , but also there are none to steam up the Bosphorus and throw a shell into his palace , and that is the first Object to be thought of . The . incident which led to the order for the extinction of the Turkish navy was as follows : A transport was bringing a number of time-expired men home when they respectfully mutinied and begged their officers to go below , as they wished to do something w ^ ich might not be approved of . Some nonrcommissiqned officers then took command and anchored off Dolma Bagtcheh and , after firing a small salute , began shouting : Long live the sultan ! This demonstration caused immediate confusion at the palace and various h...
