BIG EGG FACTORY . The tremendous growth , during recent years , of the poultry and egg industry , which , in point of value of the product , now ranks as one of the leading American wealth-producing activities , has resulted in the introduction of modern scientific methods which are quite as markedly in contrast to former practices as the advances In any other progressive Held of endeavor , says Scientific American . Indeed , to present-day achievements in this direction must be attributed the export trade in eggs , which has recently invaded markets as far distant as the Orient . Perhaps the most convincing demonstration of what scientific methods are accomplishing in the poultry industry is afforded by the unique poultry farm at Sidney , Ohio , which ranks as the largest in the United Stales , and probably in the world . The buildings which comprise tho plan consist of two main structures and a number of smaller inclosures . All are of brick construction , with slate roots , and m...

JWW INSPIRATION CAME TO DOWIE . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

JWW INSPIRATION CAME TO DOWIE . One night , in Melbourne , there swept over his consciousness like an inspiration the full force of the sixteenth chapter of St . Mark— He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved . * * * In my name shall they cast out devils . * * They shall lay hands on the sick , and they shall recover . * His imagination was fired with the idea that he was the prophet foretold by Malachi , afra on this inspiration he founded what is suppositious !*^ new in his creed and built the foundation of his really im mense fortune . He laid hands on his wifes head , prayed , and cured her of headache , and then , as a wit will have it , he proceeded to . lay hands on everybody and everything else . Those who know Dowie say that from early life he had visions and that he manifested all those symptoms which the alienist would put under the general head of religious hysteria ; if this be so , it would offer a plea for his sincerity . His wife and others cured , and the le...

PREPARING FOR OLD AGE . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

PREPARING FOR OLD AGE . In these days the model life seems to be the strenuous life . We educate our youth for action and strife , and we do not educate our boys and girls to live . Yet there is a time in life when action and strife are impossible , but there never is a time when it is not possible to be . To one properly trained to live , the crowning time of life , in this world , is that period in which to be and only to be is possible . This climax of life in this world is old age . We frame our courses of study ^ o develop hustlers , for the hustlers and the huskies are looked upon , too often , as heroes . We , therefore , are too much inclined to encourage our young people to seek the training which we believe will develop them into such characters , and overlook the time , when , from age , the hustler will no longer hustle , and the husky is nothing but husks . If some of us counsel caution and advise some other course , we are called dreamers . When we seek for ourselves ,...

BREVITIES [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

BREVITIES Grumbling is the child of greed . Sincerity Is never self-conscious . Sin is never healed by humoring it . It takes all of life to know all of love . Faith is the greatest force in the world . You cannot feed the soul on frozen truttis . Style Is no substitute for sterling strength . The life that does no good ls guilty ot much harm . Character may be sold , but it cannot be bought . Some people fear to try lest they should succeed . The hope of this world is in the hard things we have to do . As soon as a man ls good enough he is no longer any good . Character is what we are when we havent time to calculate . People who borrow trouble are always ready to lend advice . The devil needs to do nothing for the man who has nothing to do . No man moves this world until he ls profoundly moved himself . It takes more than a bellows In the pulpit to start a fire In the church . They who laugh at another s distress have no ability to share another s joy . The soundness of a man s fo...

UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

The Department of Agriculture has made extremely liberal exceptions relative to the importation of animals for exhibition at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition . The immense importance of the live stock display at the Worlds Fair has been recognized by the department in allowing every privilege for imported animals that was possible to grant while keeping in mind the barring of disease , and orders have been issued accordingly . Canadian animals intended for exhibition at the fair will be admitted on the certificate of a Canadian official veterinarian , stating that the * y are free from contagious or infectious diseases and have not been exposed to contagion within ninety days . Horses from Great Britain and Europe will be admitted by passing veterinary inspection by an inspector of the Bureau of Animal Industry at the port of entry . Cattle will be admitted on a permit from the Department of Agriculture . The quarantine period for cattle imported from Great Britain , Ireland and th...

ALFALFA . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

ALFALFA . Ward A . Martin writes ? ¦ One of the valuable qualities of the plant is its ability to supply itself with moisture during : long continued drouths by going away down after it , unless prevented by hardpan or other impenetrable subsoil too near the surface . The best soil for it ls a mellow and naturally well drained loam , underlaid with any sort of porous subsoil that ls comparatively rich in elements of plant food to the depth of a rod from the surface . That depth is not necessary to insure success , but the deeper the soil to the first stratum at all impenetrable to plant roots , the better alfalfa land it is . I have seen some good alfalfa on land that was underlaid at a depth of one to two feet by a stratum more than foot thick which was composed of at least half rock , of average size of a man s fist . But the other half was good and porous soil , the roots turned this way and that , but tending ever downward , to get through the difficulty . A deep and naturally w...

KEEP ADVERTISING . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

KEEP ADVERTISING . It is true th ^ t cattle prices have ., declined considerably in the last year as compared with the extremely high prices that prevailed before the slump <> i- hogs declined below their real and or hogs delcined below their real and normal values ? I believe not . By looking up past statistics and valuations and prices I find that even now prices are fully up to the ten-yenr average and even a trifle higher . True , values have tumbled , but not because of any serious lack in ilomond or because of any deterioration m quality or faultliness in breeding , but lather because conditions are assuming a more normal attitude and the spark of reason is returning to those who were allied away by enthusiasm and boom ideas . To the breeder of pure bred cattle and lu IKS the future should be ever bright ; A uh the rapid elimination of the scrub , and the growing wisdom of our farmers who are awakening to the fact that it is nuire profitable to feed than ...

THE FLOOD OF 1903 . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

THE FLOOD OF 1903 . When Noah nnd his - Personally Conducted party emerged from the flood which set the high-water mark for all subsequent overflows , that venerable Pilot and those who accompanied him on that memorable voyage were glad to escape with their lives . It ls not recorded that tho General Passenger Agent of that ancient company ever thought of endeavoring to retrieve his losses by advertising the resources of his craft . He was a trifle slow in perceiving that The Only Way to get even with a calamity is to tell the people all about it and to clinch tho story by truth-telling camera records . That is whore General Passenger Agent Charlton of the Chicago & Alton By , at Chicago , shows inmpi-ovement over the methods of his famous predecessor . If the advertising department of Noah s historic transportation company had taken photographs of scenes along his Route . it would have relieved posterity or all question of doubt as to the depth of tho waters on that exc...

BILTMORE HERD BOARS . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1903

BILTMORE HERD BOARS . Mr . Geo . F . Weston , writes of the herd boars in use on sows composing the February 9 th sale at Biltmore : Danesfieid Warrior Sl 28 . Sired by Manor Favorite , dam Danesfieid Poetess ^ 1 st . Paternal g-sire Julius Caesar ; paternal g-dam May Burton III . This great boar was left in England last year with great regret , owing to the fact that his owners didnt care to part with him , and in addition having never served a sow , they could not guarantee him a breeder , but he was placed in the stud and has proven a most prolific breeder of large litters , very uniform in size and type . This is to be expected when his pedigree is studied , his grand dam May Buurton III . having the reputation of having been one of the greatest show and breeding sows ever produced in England ; a record which we have compiled shows that every animal produced by May Burton III . has either been a winner itself , or the sire or dam of winners , while the paternal grand dam of Dane...
