% ht gxmvk . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

% ht gxmvk . . Bummer Prinks . Then 1 B nothing but water capable of satisfying the thirst . All other drinks , therefore , taken for this purpose , answer it only in proportion to the quantity of this fluid they may contain . Water , if pure , mav be drunk at all times and in almost any quantity with impunity . The manner of drinking it , however , is a matter of no little importance . If gulped down in large quantities it may , by suddenly filling the stomach , so distend it as to produce a pressure not only painful , but subversive of the functions of tbat and of other internal organs . If , moreover , the water thus swallowed be excessively cold and the body unduly heated , a fatal shock may result from the instantaneous change of temperature . Thus cases are recorded of death from this cause . These , however , do not occur as often as was once supposed , and most of those fatal results before attributed to drinking cold water , are now supposed to be owing to the joint effects...

THE APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

THE APIARY . Alsike Clover . It has been said by some that after the first year Alsike clover will die out and fall to produce an abundant crop . That such Is not the case , however , the sample I now send you will fully prove . It was grown by my brother , H . M . THOMAS , aud was taken from the sanip field that last year produced eight bushels of seed to the acre , this being the third years growth . The whole field Is a swamp of clover and a perfect wave of flowers . It has been in full bloom for four weeks , and will continue at least a week longer . It is abundant in honey , and a perfect clond of bees visit It everyday . For two weeks past the weather has been so dry that other flowers have secreted but little honey ; even white clover has failed to secrete its usual abundance , but my brothers bees have continued gathering large supplies from the Alsike clover , storing large -quantities of surplus honey . I would urge the growing of this clover as being one of the best ho-ne...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

THE POULTRY YARD Bapid Growth of Chickens and Ducks . . On the 18 th of February there was hatched a clutch of ten chickens ; the severe cold weather reduced them to seven . It was my Intention to have tested with this clutch how much grain it would take to make a pound of flesh , or , iu other words , how many pounds of flesh a bushel of grain would : make ; but owing to the severe cold weather , I regarded the time extremely unfavorable to carry out the experiment , as the growth of chicks depends much on the state of the weather . Having abandoned the account of food consumption , I decided to weigh them each month up to three months old . Chicks In the Spring of 1867 gained a pound a month , and at three months some of the largest weighed over three pounds each . This season , owing to the cold , the growth for the flrst two months was not nearly so rapid , and yet , strange to say , at the end of three months some of the largest ran up to and over a pound a month the seven wegh...

hen . killed . three , leaving only seven . For the first week they were confined in a small enclosure , a board hish , with plenty of food ( scalded meal , cracked corn and wheatscreenings ) and clean drlnkins water ; hen Kept In the coop to keep them warm at nights . After a week they bad the run of the garden and grouuds , over an acre ; -food always ready when they chose to eat it , but earth-worms seemed to be their main food Their growth was fo astonishing that I weighed them oh the 81 st of May , and found the seven ducks weighed eight pounds . At the end of a week , 7 th of June , I again weighed them , and found their weight twelve pounds fifteen ounces—being a gain of four and pounds fifteen ounces in one week , or one five-eighth ounces , per day each . It will therefore be seen that while chicks put on only a half ounce offlesh per , day , or a pound . per month , ducks convert their food into duck flesh at the rate of over an ounce per day , or about two pounds per mont...
