THE FARM VETERINARY [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

THE FARM VETERINARY fOOX ATO MOUTH DISEASE Foot and mouth disease has broken out in the states of Pennsylvania and New York , and as a result these states have been- put in quarantine . No cattle , sheep or swine are allowed to be shipped out of them except in the case of animals which are shipped through in sealed cars . The United States Depart * ment of Agriculture has begun the work of stamping out the disease . It is known that animals in several counties in Pennsylvania are affected , but the origin of the disease is not known at this time . It seems to have been discovered first at the Buffalo stock yards . <• While common in European countries , foot and mouth disease has never obtained a foothold in the United States , and consequently little is known about it . It is a disease which attacks a large number of different animals—cattle , hogs , sheep , wild animals , the horse , dog , cat , and even man . It is not very often fatal , the losses by death running fro...

MAIL ORDER HOUSES [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

MAIL ORDER HOUSES tcOHOW tne a man or a movement O whose enemies work in the dark and Ill show you a man or a movement worthy of an honest man s confidence . Ever since mail order houses have amounted to anything , they have been mere targets for every imaginable sort of abuse at the hands of the strongly intrenched jobbing and retailing interests . Several so-called trade papers and scores of local , state and national associations owe their existence to the supposed power they wield in stamping out the catalogue house evil ; and quite a sizeable army of well-paid secretaries and other job-holders earn their daily bread by fanning and continually stirring the embers of hatred for mail order houses , by publicly disseminating falsehood and misinformation and by doing things in private that they would scarcely like to acknowledge publicly . We happen to have before us a typical case in point . The lumberHrust , which in its way is as vicious as the coal trust , is so much annoyed at ...

THE FARMERSFORUM sja «** axaBn ***** ajBBWBBBBBBBBBBB * BaB * jaaBx * s »*^^ WOULD GET FIRST-HAND INFORMATION Editor Farm Press : Is the agricultural college a failure ? I think not , and believe the best way to settle this question would be for you to ask some of the Farm Press readers who have completed a four-year course in good agricultural colleges to give their opinions . Ask them if there is a demand for graduates from the good colleges , also what wages they earned when they started in the pursuit of their calling and what they get now . Tell them to let us all know through the Farm Press . Delaware , Ky . H . E . W . THINKS DUAL PURPOSE COWS BEST Editor Farm Press : In reply to Mr . Johnson Stokes , of Wisconsin , who asks whether or not it will pay him to turn his dairy into a beef herd on land worth $ 100 per acre , I wish to say that from fifteen years of perience in this line of farming , I consider the keeping of dual purpose Shorthorn cows the most profitable , milkin...

3 RCHARI AND GARDEN [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

3 RCHARI AND GARDEN HOW HUNGARY IS PROMOTING FRUIT RAISING A few years ago Hungary , despite the fact that many of its districts may be numbered among the best fruit-growing sections in the world , was importing an amount of fruit equal to two-thirds the crop grown on home soil . Within ten years , however , it is claimed by a writer in The Popular Magazine , this country will be , without fear of a challenge , the premier fruit-producing country in the world , and all because some four years ago it occurred to some one in the Hungarian ministry that it would be a good idea to plant fruit trees by the roadside in every parish in the country and see that they were looked after on-modern lines . In Hungary the main roads are under the ownership of the state , while the subsidiary highways are managed by the parish and country councils . A special survey of all the state highways was undertaken to determine the kind of trees suited to the different localities , and three government orc...

The Farmer ' s Lawyer [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

The Farmer s Lawyer COMPENSATION FOR HIGHWAY PRIVILEGES A subscriber owns land in Pennsylvania through which runs a road that was formerly a turnpike but was bought by the county and is now a public highway . His deed calls for the center of the turnpike . A projected interurban trolley line is to run its tracks down the center of the road . He wants to know whether he is entitled to compensation for the use of the highway on the theory that it is a new burden on the road the title to which belongs to him subject to the easement for highway purposes . Ans . The subscriber is asking a question winch is being answered in different ways by the courts . The majority of the courts of last resort in this country take the view that where the title to the highway is in the adjoining owner and the public has merely an easement for highway purposes , the owner is entitled to compensation on the ground that an added burden has been placed on the highway by the operation of the traction road . ...

OUR MODEL FARM [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1909

OUR MODEL FARM ELECTRICITY OH THE FARM Many farmers are study ing the question of using electricity and electric appliances on the farm . One thing that has long stood in the way has been the cost of installing a plant which would produce whatever electricity was needed and an equipment which would be adapted to conditions . Unless a large amount can be used it is better to purchase the current direct from a power company , if there is one in your vicinity . XHB E 1 BCTHIC m _—nI In this case the first cost would involve only the cost of the necessary electrical appliances . Otherwise , where the cost of the current would be $ 1 , 000 a year or over , a considerable saving can be made in the purchase of a small internal combustion engine and an electric storage battery . The extreme simplicity of both this type of engine and the storage battery , together with the very great econ omy in fuel consumption , the low price of fuel , and the efficiency of the battery as a device for stor...
