OLD O NOT A "COURTBOK." A NlfiW TRUNK 14NJB NEEDED From tha New York Tribune. a new element of competition, but be- cause it will reduce the cost of trans- portation to the company It has al- ready been explained why a freight train running on a traok used for mix- ed traffic, dodging passenger trains, and waiting at switches, consumes on the journey more than twice its actual running time. The work that it does in ten days, under the present system, could be done in five if it had the traok to itself, and done with less wear and tear and much less expenditure of fuel. Mr. Yanderbilt recognizes this fact, and is providing a double roadway for the New York Central whioh will not only greatly reduce the cost of moving freight, but more than quadruple the oapaoity of the road. Do for the whole route what the Directors of the New York Central are doing for a section of it, then enlarge the Erie Canal, and the transportation difficulty will be re- lieved, even if it is not removed. «as» ...

FALL, PLOWIMO. From the Western Rural. The object of all plowing is either to kill weeds, oover naoore, or the trash of previous crops, pulverise the soil, and render it open to the influences that are constantly working by which it.mav be disintegrated and made per meable to gases. Frost is one of the prime agencies, in connection with moisture, in breaking down the cohes ion of stiff soils disintegrating andfren dering them friable and permeable to the air, the oxygen of wbioh is thein great destroyer and at the- same time the great regenerator. A soil, sour and infertile through putrefaction or other agencies, is thereby oxygenated and rendered fertile for when the putrefaotioo is ohanged to an oxidating process, oarbonio aoid, one of the prime constituents of plants, is Tendered available this is only one of the chem ical changes produced by the aotion ol the air upon-soils. What we call mechanical ohaages ia soils are fully asimportant as the ohem* ioal ones, although the meoha...
