If we "roll back the tidd of time" but for a few short years, we see that many changes have passed over this beautiful portion of our fertile State. Not many years ago, a few gins were sufficient for all the planters along our alluvial bayous, and throughout the productive prairies of St. Landry; and no sugar house sent up its volumes of smoke, giving tokens of the cultivation of another of the great staples of the South. .One little steamboat, in a short period of time, during t1 9T~8 son, did all the carrying trade of our Parish. The bol.,ted wealth of Spelousas then consisted in immense herds of cattle, ? which roamed at large over the richest pasturagd in the world, and yielded to their owners an abundant harvest of earth's glit tering'dust, whid. makes the son of man proud amongst his fellow worms...
