Only 3,000 Men, Instead of 8,000 Sur rendered---Roberts Sends the De tails of the Affair. London, Feb. STSpl)- p. in. Much 'surprise was expressed here when Lord Roberts officially notified the government that the prisoners' surrendered numbered only 3,000. It was expected he had captured a force, of at least 8,000, and unless Oronje's casualties number among the thousands, the first great British victory will not turn out to be so great after all, as it seems incredible that a force of 4-5,000 trained British soldiers, under the greatest Brit ish commander the British Empire has, could have been held in check by 3,000 Boers for ton days and not inflict severe loss. It is said Lord Roberts has declined to permit the newspaper correspondents to send a complete report of the situation, and many details are lacking. Loudon, Feb. 27. (Spl.)
