Jealousy is a slow fire that sears the soul and keeps it in an unremitting agony. What business of the man is it if the women wear half hose or whole hose or holy hose ? The energy wasted in useless kicking would operate all our large factories anfl still leave a little to spare. It costs nothing to be polite and the other fellow knows it as well as you do when you are polite to him. AVAWClOUe AND FILTHY. Bouie Queer Characteristics of the The recent murder near the sources of the Blue Nile M. Dubois De- eaulle , a French cispondcnt accom- paiij'ing the McMii i expedition , has turned the eyes of the world toward half-Christian , half-pagan Abyssinia , by some of whose people the murder was committed. The McMillan expedi tion is to learn how much of the Blue Nile Is navigable , so that , with the opening of the British built canal around the Second Cataract of the Nile in Egypt , the rich agricultural and mineral products of central Abyssinia may be floated down to the Mediterra nean. As the head of the expedition is a St. Louis man , and his present position is not without grave danger , Washington , as well as Paris , is inter ested. The disastrou defeat of Italy some time ago at the hands of King Menelik has warned Caucasian nations that the Abyssinian is not o be trifled with. MENELIK : n. OF ABYSSINIA. THE VALENTINE DEMOCRAT I. M BICE , Publisher. TALENTINE , NEBRASKA. The inoth exhibits muc i taste In dress. Some girls never flirt but perhaps it Isn't their fault It Is better to know little than to know a lot that isn't true. Promises may get friends , but it re quires performances to keep them. If fame came only after death no man would kill himself striving for It. One glance at a political orator proves that all are not geysers that spout It Isn't necessary to spend money in advertising your troubles ; simply tell them to a gossip. Often It happens that a man isn't known by the company he keeps until after he mysteriously disappears. Somehow the sun doesn't seem to shine half so hot on the baseball grounds as It does on the harvest field. A lot of citizens would gladly give up what Dr. Stevenson classifies as a privilege of citizenship the privilege of paying taxes. Why Do "Women Karn Wastes ? It would seem superfluous to ask why women are wage earners. But there Is never a day that somewhere In this broad land a preacher , a workingman - ingman , a statistician or a college pro fessor does not discourse on the wage- eaming woman as though she were a perverse creature , indulging her fling at old-time conventions and , in consequence quence , upsetting things masculine in a way that is not only hard for the Individual man worker to bear , but which is also subversive of funda mental props of the good old time , fault is it that the woman If it be a crime or a wrong , is guiltless , for man's laws say she must not take her own life , and her only choice is between that or en gaging in gainful occupation. She works because her father was or is incompetent or a drunkard or un thrifty , or what is known as a pool- business man , or because he married when he should not have ( lone so ; or , along with fellowmen , he carried the home industries out ...
