Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, : : : : : MARCH 23. Improving the Colorado River. Receiving information from Washington that any efforts, on our part, would be ably seconded in securing necessary legislation for improving the navigation of the Colorado River, we prepared petitions for circulation through the Territory. They read as follows: To the Congress of the United States Tlic undersigned, your petitioners, would most respectfully represent that Arc arc citizens, in Arizona, residing in the great basin drained by the Colorado River; that said basin is rich in niinea and susceptible of great agricultural development;, that a moderate expenditure in the removal of existing obstacles, would make said Colo rado River navigable at all seasons of the year, for a distance of over six hundred1 miles, and thus op...

Arizona Sentinel. 3ATUKDAY, : : : : : MARCH 80. Yuma in Politics. Territorial papers are already canvassing the prospects of the next election; but in all their war talk there is little mention of Yu ma county. Our total population is not quite as large as that of Ya vapai or Pima, hut the railroad terminus here, and our recent mining developments, have at t traded a large number of people "who will vote. Yuma county is entitled to go into any convention on the same footing and with the same representation as any other county. After the first election conducted on party lines, Yuma is willing to take, in subsequent conventions, the position to which her vote may entitle her. Till then, she declines to play second fiddle, or to be made a cat's-paw, for the other counties of the North or South. Yuma has never been sectional; her citizens have not participated in any of the strug gles for the capitol, for headquar ters, or for anything else. There may not be among us a man will ing to ...

APRIL 20, 187S. Arizona Frelgitc Docs Pay--JBl. Our sympathies are often ap pealed to in behalf of the South ern Pacific Hailroacl Company, which is represented as having built, and as running, a long line of road over a desert that gives no way-tmllic for nearly two hun dred miles. As far as concerns the road from San Francisco to Los Angeles, we are disposed to ad mire the pluck that traversed long barren stretches of the TuLire and Mohave (California) plains, and conquered the stupendous difficul ties of Tehatchene and San Fer nando. We can believe that this part of the Southern Pacific road gives no profitable return on con struction or operation, and we are sorry for it. But as regards Ari zona, we can prove it to be the province on which is levied the best tribute that goes into railroad coffers. For the road north of Los Angeles, Arizona is not responsi ble. From that city to Col ton, the ties are laid on the ground almost without any grading at all, and the rails run through...
