In looking over your paper for several weeks past, and seeing the efibrt you aro making to have our present Legislators give us a dog-tax law, or, of you plesso to call it, ashcep and wool-raisers' protection, agrees with my views exactly. Four years ago, when 1 bought and moved into this county, Botetourt, some of my friends in my native State, Maryland, advised mc to gf> to sheep and wool-raising, having such a large boundary of land not in condition to commence cropping wheat on account of there being too much blue grass sod, and fences so out of repair. 1 saw tire importance of such a move and at once commenced to consult with some of the best farmers of the county on the subject; but they discouraged mc to a man. And as he enunciated the words with impressive distinctness he looked at Harry Clifford. He might have found a worse looking individual lo fix his regards upon than this young M. M., who had taken his first lessons m bones, muscles and human anatomy, with the therapeutics belonging thereto, in the Utile oflice across the hall, and was just preparing to hang up a shingle of his own ; for Harry Clifford was tall and shapely, with red-brown hair and a huge auburn moustache, and merry eyes that laughed like springs of water in tho sunshine. Br. Darling took off his spectacles, folded them in their case, and without taking his eyes from his neophyte. Harry Clifford smiled ; but he looked a little embarrassed notwithstanding. "Sho would have you in a minute, if you woultl only propose," pursued Dr. Darling, dropping great read...

Evening State gautnat. MONDAY EVENING, FEB. 2G, 1872. MORTON'S REPLY TO TRI'MBT ■!,_. cnco, cannot bolster up this party ; it will go down, and it will be the good fortune of some men who have allied themselves with it if they do not go down too. He then sent to tlie desk to be read a speech of Govonior Hrown, of Missouri, which he said was proof that it was intended to nominate a candidate at Cincinnati. Governor Brown's speech shows that he has some idea of getting the nomination himself, but if some man from some other Stale should be preferred—meaning, of course, the Sanator from Illinois—he (Hrown) would cheerfully support him. The Senator from Illinois, it was pretty well understood through the country, would be a candidate before that convention. The Senator had, in view of this, separated himself from the Republican party, but he remained within easy distance, so that if necessary he could return. Hut his back was chalked all o\ er with "Barkis is willing." [Great laughter, ...
