PAGE 6 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MARCH, 1987 EARLY INFLUENCE OF RELIGION c 1987 IN THE BLUE RIDGE (PART 3) BY: WILLIAM P. SWARTZ, JR. Another God-fearing preacher of gigantic faith and preaching influence named Robert S. Sheffey, born July 4, 1820 near Ivanhoe, Virginia, Wythe County. After losing his mother at age four and his father at age eight, he and his brother Laurence were then reared by their Uncle James and Aunt Elizabeth White in Abingdon, Virginia. Colonel White, commissioned in the war of 1812, was a wealthy plantation and slave owner with numerous other substantial business interest in four states. He offered to sponsor Bob Sheffey's college education at Emory and Henry College. To Colonel White's consternation Bob refused, stating that he did not feel the need of and he was not led to obtain a college degree. This caused somewhat of a riff between the 18 year old youth and his uncle. Soon thereafter Col. White died of a heart attack and Bob Sheffy did attend Emory and Henry Col...

RELIGION Continued from page 6 him to the locality and set out. When he found the remote small cabin, he found a small, bruised and battered woman who looked old at eighteen and who said, "Mamma said before she died if I ever needed help to write you and you would come." She went on to say that her husband was not a bad man if and when he was sober, but that he stayed drunk most of the time and during that time he was savage, brutal and demonic in his treatment of his family. Brother Sheffy took his sheepskin and climbed to a secluded spot on the mountain back of the cabin where he sought the Lord's help and counsel in prayer. Soon after he returned to the cabin the woman's husband arrived on his horse. He was too drunken to dismount without his wife's aid. Stumbling and cursing, he fell into a drunken stupor. His wife said he would be like that until late in the night. Brother Sheffy said to the wife, "Here is some money. Go to several stores and buy demijohns of liquor and brandy ...

PAGE 8 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MARCH, 1987 GRANDMOTHER'S FLOWER GARDEN A QUILT YOU CAN MAKE This is a very old quilt pattern, although just how old no one seems to know. If you would rather work with needle and thread instead of seeds and dirt, you can still produce a "beautiful crop" by summer. This quilt pattern is best done by hand instead of on a sewing machine because the corners are very hard to sew together. Make sure you cut your pattern and pieces very carefully because if they aren't straight, it will distort the size and shape of your quilt blocks and you'll have a heck of a time trying to fit them together. Every block in the quilt is the same size and shape. You have the option of finishing the outside row in the same pattern, which is beautiful but difficult, or using one-half of the pattern to come out with a straight edge. One of the nicest things about this quilt pattern is that it can be cut from small scraps of material. You might like to go through your scrap material an...

GROW A GRANDMOTHER'S FLOWER GARDEN We all remember them - the flower gardens our grandmothers grew. They might have been a long strip along the road front of the yard, right next to the back door or lining the path to the out house, but one thing was for sure, our grandmothers sure took pride in them. Picture, if you will, an old fashioned farm house and yard. There was probably boxwood bushes on either side of the front steps. If not boxwoods, then some kind of evergreen shrub, giving off a musty faint odor. Next to these were probably yellow bell (forsythia) bushes. At a special place of honor was usually a special rose bush, Grandma's pride and joy. It usually had a story attached to its origin. Sometimes it was a cutting started from a dear friend's bush, or had been carried a great distance to rest in that soil. The back door, usually off the kitchen, sometimes had hollyhocks or sunflowers planted there. There was an old saying that if you planted a sunflower at your kitchen do...

PAGE 10 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MARCH, 1987 THE STRANGE, TRUE STORY OF THE BELL WITCH OF TENNESSEE BY : DON WICK Editor's Note.... The following is the second of a five part series of stories sent to us by the Tennessee Department of Tourism Developement. If you like "haint" stories, you're going to love this one! Adams, Tenn. - Attempts by the Bell family and their neighbors to communicate with whatever it was in the Bell house produced an unexpected result. The thing began to talk. At first it was only a low, broken, whistling sound, but the strange, disembodied voice quickly gained strength. It became a distinct whisper and finally a clear and clearly feminine voice. Naturally, one of the first questions asked was, "What are you?" The disembodied voice said, "I am a spirit. I was once very happy but I have been disturbed." That is all it would say about itself and in all the time it stayed with the Bell family it always seemed reluctant to talk about itself. Some students of the Witch be...

MOUNTAIN RECIPE Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.", many years ago. She was no doubt referring to Robert Browning, her husband, but to this country girl, those words could just as easily refer to potatoes. Ah, Potatoes, what would we do without them? If you grew up country proud or city poor, I don't have to tell you the importance of potatoes. There isn't anything you can't do with a potato. You can fry, boil, bake, make soup. Slice, dice, hash, shred and mash them. You can cook them in their skins, out of their skins or restuff them back in their skins. There is even a clock on the market now that is reported to run on potato power. It seems that you hook the clock up to the potato with some kind of wires. At any rate, people have been relying on potatoes for a long, long time. Here in the Blue Ridge, people seem to be even more partial to potatoes than most places. I guess it's the predominately Scotch-Irish heritage of our forefathers s...

PAGE 12 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MARCH, 1987 The Mail Box Dear Susan, As soon as I receive it [THE MOUNTAIN LAUREL], and read it I send it to my mother "Garnet Davis" who lives in Indiana and will be 84 on January 30th. I have been to the Blue Ridge Mtn. three times and loved them each time. My sister and I brought Mother there several years ago and she still talks about the trip. My husband and I wanted to bring her to Meadows of Dan, Va. this past summer, but because of her health she couldn't make the trip. She loves everything old fashioned, and lived in a log cabin surrounded by woods until my Father started losing his eyesight and they had to move to town. She misses the country and her long walks through the woods, but relives the past through your paper. She dreams of going on all the "Backroad Trips." Thank you for giving her hours of pleasure and dreams. Sincerely, C. Schraeder Northville, Michigan Dear Editor, I certainly do enjoy your newspaper. My First knowledge of your paper w...

MARCH, 1987 SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK ANNOUNCES NEW FEES Effective February 1, 1987, the price of admission to Shenandoah National Park is now $5.00 per passenger vehicle and $2.00 per single entry for those entering in commercial busses, on bicycles, or on foot according to Park Supervisor Ron Wrye. This is the first increase in entrance fees at the Park since 1972. According to Wrye, perhaps the most significant point to keep in mind with the new fees is the fact that unlike previous years the National Park Service will get to keep a significant portion of the monies collected in order to enhance resource management, interpretive and research activities which jiave suffered in recent years due to inflationary impacts on fairly stable budget levels. Additionally, the fees will cover a 7-day visit as opposed to the current 3-day limit now in effect. The new fee authorization schedule applies only to the current fiscal year which ends on September 30,1987. This year the Golden Eagle P...

The attractions and services listed in the Blue Ridge Digest are also listed in lettered-numbered sections that correspond to the map. In order to locate the services available within a specific area simply determine the block number of the area you're interested in by using the numbers on the left side of the map and the letters across the top of each map. After determining the block reference, (example: H-l 1 includes the area around Meadows of Dan, Virginia), check the Blue Ridge Digest listings beginning on page BRD2 for the services available in that area. Each of the blocks encompass an area that is approximately a 45 minute drive left to right and approximately a 30 minute drive from top to bottom across each block.
