." Page 18 TheBfanrT February 8 1996F Storybook fantasy much on romance little on detail The thought of Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Mastcrson portraying young lovers undoubtedly produces a picture- perfect image in the mind. So why does their latest movie Bed of Roses come off as a simple run-of-the-mill romance? Completeness it lacks it. Inspired by "a chance and fleeting romance" in the life of first-lime filmmak- er Michael GoWcnbcrg Bed of Roses is the story of two people in desperate need of love. One has loved and lost the other has never really loved at all. Unfortunately when the two come togeth- er Goldenbcrg barely scratches the surface of their romance and the story ends up a superficial storybook fantasy. Lisa (Mastcrson) is a workaholic investment broker who lives for the thrill of the deal. Her life centers around her work and the clientele she meets with leaving little time for anything else on the side. Her tedious stock broker boyfriend only reflects the state ...

&g?a -toga1 ggffii&jqgjB&g. Robbins delivers powerful message in Oscar-worthy film By Onus Hatcher entertainment editor Dead Man Walking the latest film in this year's line of potential Oscar nomi- nees gives the initial impression of a typi- cal "Hey I didn't do it so help me fight my injusticcH-type movie. However by the film's highly dramatic end the exception- al dppth and emotional overload director Tim Robbins delivers in his look at capital punishment will have you weeping a dif- ferent tune. Robbins in his second film as a writer-director carries Dead Man to a powerful stance-taking level with his excellent perception. The movie earnestly captures both sides of the death penalty issue posing the question of what it means for a man or government to kill. But more importantly it penetrates a realm of divinity concerning redemption and death adding a quality to the film that's nothing short of spiritual. Sean Penn makes his bid for an Oscar as the thuggish Matthew P...

Page 22 The Brand February 8 1996 . Cowboy Dominance Cowboys find more than one way to win in TIAA cage race ByJoshBowerman sports editor The Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys continued their recent dominance of opponents two Saturday's ago as they ousted the University of Dallas 88-7 1 at the Mabce Complex. Cleburne sophomore Bernard Combs scorched the Crusaders for a career-high 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting with five of his seven field goals coming from behind the three-point arc. HSU held only a 41-33 lead at halfUmc but by the midpoint of the second half two back-to-bock three-point plays by senior Shane Buck and one of Combs' three point- ers had put the game on ice. Buck also added a team-high nine rebounds while senior Kevin Richardson pitched in 18 points on a 7 for 11 shooting performance. Sophomore point guard Jake Escobar also dished out six assists in the victory. Wednesday HSU was able to withstand a game-opening 16-2 barrage by the McMurry University Indians for a com...

February 15 1996 The Brand Page 3 Remembering a smile and just wondering why? On Tuesday I looked across the room at an empty chair and I simply wondered "Why?" Just last Thursday I looked over to that same chair and saw a smiling face and thought nothing of it. Whether intentionally or uninten- tionally I looked up from my notes that day and saw Erin smiling. I don't know why I looked up but I did. Why did God give me that moment? Now I sit here trying to figure this whole thing out and I wonder why? All of my memories of Erin have come down to this one single passing glance in a speaker-audience class. Maybe it is because it is my most recent memory of her. She has written for The Brand we've had classes together but the most prolific thought that I have about her is this simple smile in that class. I'm wondering if that memory Slight of Mind Trenten HlLBURN editor-in-chief isn't something that God hasn't just implanted for a purpose? I sit here and think about what it is about Er...

February 15 19 The Brand Page 5 Harris responds to criticism of her stance on abortion Christy Hakris guest columnist I Was very exdted to find out that in the last edition of The Brand there were responses to my article on abortion. I appreciate everyone who took the time to read it. I am glad to have the chance to clarify several "questionables" from the article. When 1 wrote my article it was not an article at all. I never intended to have it published anywhere. I wrote it as an English paper on which incidentally I received an A. Any grammatical or mechanical errors that appear in the article were not present after an English professor (the Dean of Arts and Sciences) checked it for exactly those type of mis- takes. Also the event for which I originally wrote the paper did not call for documentation of facts but did call for a heartfelt plea from the author. My paper was simply an attempt to meet these require- ments. I am more than happy to correct a terrible mis- representation...

Page 6 The Brand February 15 19 Woo hits and misses in latest action flick There's a common characteristic sur- rounding many of today's action films the more they're hyped the less they deliver. This holds true for Broken Arrow Twentieth Century Fox's over-publicized action flick which comes off as some- what disappointing despite it's ballistic tendencies. John Travolta is out of his clement as a renegade military madman we're sup- posed to hate (unlike his thuggishly appealing portrayals in Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty ) and Christian Slater as the soldier-boy who saves the day is way out of his league. But due to some high pow- ered special effects by director John Woo Hong Kong's critically acclaimed action guru. Broken Arrow manages to keep it's audience interested . Page 2 The Brand February 22 1996 'Abortion does not lend itself to black and white thinking' TWo weeks ago I wrote The Brand rebutting the article submitted on the pro- life position. In my rebuttal I promised to write again on my position on abortion. For the sake of the discussion on such a difficttk social problem I wanted to delineate say own position. The abortion issue does not load itself to simplistic and Mack and white thinking. I found that while abortion may be detestable act in my opinion there arc occasions aa which abortion is a necessary eviL We do not live in a world where on can adamantly and listlessly retain a simplistic perspective on a controversial issue. A moral dilemma occurs within an iridescence of alternative particular situations and unpredictable events. To explicate a defined position on an issue requkes depth of thought and study for the formulation of a well informed opin- ion. To do anything less is to bask in one's own ignorant folly.
