C Kingston) said that he intended to nioye the second reading of the Federation Bill next week. The Minister of Education, in reply to a question, said the new telegraph line route to West Australia was being pegged, and tenders for the supply of the poles had come in during the last few days, and were being considered. The West Australian Government was pressing on their end of the line. He did not think it wise to dispense with, the system of sending 'urgent'1 mes sages.

Sir John Forrest had a splendid re ception at the Theatre Royal to-night, when he delivered an address to ths Goldfields League. The Mayor (Mr A. W. McDonald) presided over an immense attendance, the building being crowded to the doors, whilst hundreds were unable to gain admission. Tbe Premier carried his audience with him from start to finish. He described ' what had been__dQiiei__anji what was 'being done for the fields, and the efforts made by the House to meet the wishes of the fields, including the remission of the duties on kerosene, sugar, tea, and other articles most largely used by a mining community. The- applause was frequent, and was occasionally interspersed with good natured chaff. TERRIBLE TRAGEDY. A FATHER SHOOTS HIS SON. A terrible tragedy occurred at St. Kilda yesterday afternoon. Leopold Hesse, a well-known manufacturing chemist, killed his eldest son, aged 22, by shooting him with a rifle. Hesse was in comfortable circumstances, hav ing been a manufacturer of disinfec tants and deodorisers, and latterly manager of the Domestic Sanitary Co. He went to West Australia to fix some sanitary appliances, and during his absence his son managed the business of the Company. The latter were pleased with the services of the son, who was a steady smart man. The father, on his return, imagined that the son was trying to work him out of his position, and wanted him to be dis charged from the service of the com pany, who, however, decided to keep him on in their employ. The son was sitting at the din ing-table yesterday afternoon, when Hesse, who was in a half-intoxicated condition in an adjoin ing room, entered and shot him dead. Kaigoorlie Police Gourt. Friday, December 6.   (Before Mr P. Fielding, E.M., and Mr R. D. Thompson.) SANITARY CASES. John Lyons was charged, on the information, of Alfred Henry Bartlett, secretary of the local Board of Health, that he, on November 29th, being the occupier of premises in Hannan-street, Kalgoorlie, on notice to that effect from the Board of Health, did not erect an earth closet or privy with proper door and coverings. The charge was laid under section 81 of the Public Health Act. Fined 30s and costs, in all £2 3s 6d.     William Taylor Linton, charged with a similar offence, was fined 12s and costs.         VAGRANCY.       David Milne was charged with having, on December 5, no means of support.
