Railways and Timber Requirements .The Railways Commissioners said last week that the Department was seriously short of sleepers, red gum scantlings needed to build bridges, station and :goods platforms, and` hardwood timbers for- general car and waggon construction.- Efforts were being made to obtain: jarrah from Western Australia and sleepers fron' Timor, a test shipment_ of which had 'been ordered :by ,the South Australian Riilways.. WedIng RUTHERFORD-SIMS A wedding of local interest took place on Saturday, 11th inst., when Douglas Sims, a well-known resident of Alexandra, was mar ried to Miss Kath Rutherford. The bridegroom, who is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Sims, is a popular member of various sporting and social clubs, and his bride the second daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Ruther ford, though practically a new comer to the district, had many well wishing friends present at St. Mary's Church where the ceremony officiated by Rev. Fr. Beare, took place. The bride made a radiant 'pic ture in a tintent taffeta with cream finger tip veil of tulle set off with a Juliet cap of pearls and matching taffetta. She carried a trailer of stephanotis, gardenias and water lillies. She was given away by her father, and was at tended by her sister, Pat, who looked very attractive in soft blue silk marquisette. New Telephone Exchange The installation of the new switchboards in. the Alexandra Exchange is well advanced, and it is expected that they will be brought into service on Saturday evening, 25th November. The actual change-over should be effected before midnight, and the new equipment would then be ready to handle the normal busi ness on Sunday. It would be most helpful if Alexandra sub .scribers would refrain from mak ing any but urgent calls from 8 p.m. on Saturday until 8 a.m. on Sunday. AlL subscribers' lines will be tested from the new switchboards as early as possible after the transfer is effected. Those sub scribers who have not contacted the exchange by lunch on Mon day are asked to ring the. ex change on Monday afternoon to make certain their line is work ing satisfactorily. SALEXANDRA SHIRE COUNCIL, NOVEMBER MEETING . When time for general business ar. ' rived at this meeting, many requests Swere made and referred to-'the en gineer for attention. - Cr. Briggs drew attention to' the need for 'signs-at-the intersection of 1 Aitken and Grant streets; :Trucks were carting inaterial' from Brewery lane, and ,if -signs were erected it would be a safeguard for traffic trav elling' in Grant street.' "All, agreed that signs were needed, and the en gineer intimated that they would "be erected. . Another, matter mentioned by Cr. Briggs was that of Downey street, on top of the' hill from the butter fac tory. Traffic could not be: observed until the top of the hill was reached, and there were at times as many 'as twenty children playing at the top of the hill.'
