Strange Foods. [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 22 October 1914

Strange Foods. But a short time ago, in New Or leans, many huge tanks oE treacle burst, and the sticky floorl swept all over the low-lying portions of the city. Hundreds of people narrowly escaped drowning, and others had to he fished out of basements, where they wore half buried in the treacle. In London once a tlood of beer broke loose from a brewery nud 9000 gal lons rushed headlong down the streets diowning many people. In Glasgow, in 1906, over 100,000 gallons of whisky flowed through the streets, wrecking buildings and en gnlling men and horses. Still more exciting was the flood of champagne which occurred recently at Epernay, in Franco. Millions of gallons of this ! costly wine were turned into the streets by strikers. The year 1S92 was famons in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., for the ter rible scenes caused by an oil Hood. So much of this liquid burst bounds that great damage was done to the city, and between three aud four hun dred people were drowned in the oil.

Green Manuring. [From the "Journal of Agriculture."] [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 22 October 1914

Greau Manuring. [From the "Journal of Agriculture."] Green manuring is effective both on sandy and heavy clay soils, and, indeed, in nil soils deficient in hu nt us. On sandy soils its effect is to consolidate tlio noil, and in clay soils it uot.s by loosening t-lio texture and letting the air act oil it. When conditions as to w.u mth and mois ture am favorable, tlie green crop de composes without much delay, and the production of a soluble plant food procoeds with considerable vap idity. j This is especially the case with the valuable nitrogenous portion of tho green stuff. Nitrification, thai is the conversion of the nitrogenous material of the plant into soluble nitrates, takes plane quickly. In sandy soils green manure nitrilies more quickly than ordinary organic manures, such as bone dust, ground horns, dried blood, eto., while in stiff clays it nitrifies more rapidly than even sulphate of ammonia or animal manures. The need --of a largo proportion of our northern wheat soils i...
