The ministry. (From the Courier, May 8th) [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 27 May 1876

Tlie ministry-. (From the Courier, May 8tl>) TUG resignation of Mr King will, in all pro bability, take no ono very much, by earpriae. Under ordinary circumstances,. it might have been expected tbat any differences of opinion which migUt have arisen would either have been ai re aged, or else that the agreement to differ which is expressed in tbis resignation would lmvc been carried into effect at an earlier date. A resignation immediately before the meeting of Parliament is unusual, and must be inconvenient. : We do uot suppose that Mr. King lias in any way wished to steal a march on bis colleagues, for they always appeared to act cordially i together. Latterly! indeed, be lias displayed a I certain moderation of tone in responding to tiie fondly-expressed wishes of consfcitueices for ! expenditure, But, notwithstanding this, it had become no secret tbat the expenditure of the Department of Works did not quite square with the wishes of the Treasury, and the Treasurer bas scarcely...

Northern Miner. WEDNESDAY, MAY 31st 1876. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 31 May 1876

WEDNESDAY, MAX 31m, 1S7G. WE abstain from any comments on the pieritfl of the notions brought against tlie editor of this journal. Three committals' have been obtained to tli" Circuit Court in Towiravilla on the 19th <.'?' Ootober neit. There is, however, room f*r a few remarks on the law of libel itself and the animus betrayed by the prosecution from ' the opening of the first case. The public will generally conclude that the wardon might have found arnplo means, by a civil aotion in the District Oourt, for soy injury his reputation was supposed, by him. to have j sustained; but, to proceed criminally, and, not content with one information, to " pile on the agony," by seeking for three com mittals, savors too much of the " pound of flesh," and 'will appear to most dis interested persons harsh and vindictive. The eases have now to be submitted to a jury, and by their decision we must abide. The lav of libel, as it exists in . "those colonies, belongs to the Dracpnift days...
