CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS TO SCHOOL TEACHERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 4 September 1909

CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS TO SCHOOL TEACHERS. At the meeting of school teachers held in the Katoomba Public School on Satur day last this vexed question came up, re sulting in a motion \-y Mr. Gollan ' that full political and civil rights be granted to all Civil Servants, provided no Civil Ser vant criticises his own Department.' This question has been discussed through the J/ress ana in conterences ror sometime past, and it seems no nearer a satisfactory solu tion to-day than it was five years ago. It has always seemed to us a monstrous thing that because a man was employed by the State he must forfeit the rights enjoyed by the poorest and meanest individual in the land ; and it also seems strange to us that the Civil Servants have not made a united demand for the repeal of the abnoxious law long ago. When this gag was introduced some years ago it was doubtless done for the purpose of stifling criticism by a class of men eminently qualified to criticise the actions of Ministers an...

The call was given at Mr. Drake's place, that a fire had broken out in a heap of bushes at the corner of Craig End street, and was likely to demolish those valuable stables owned by Mr. Craig, of Iveura. In . exactly 13 minutes from the time the call was made the water was being played on the fire, which proves that no time was lost in getting to work. Captain Pannell and his ten gallant men deserve cre dit for the smart piece of work, and when it is remembered that the distance is over one mile and was done on foot pulling ...

Presentation to Colin Gollan. Headmaster, Leura Public School. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 4 September 1909

Presentation to Colin Gollan. Headmaster, Leura Public School. It is seldom I^eura sees a more enthusi astic or representative gathering than that which assembled in the X/eura Hall on Fri day evening of last week to honor Mr. Colin Gollan with a presentation of a hand some silver tea and coffee service and an illuminated address in recognition of his valuable services as a townsman, coupled with the deep respect in which he is held by the community at large as a school master. It falls to the lot of few men in this country to demonstrate what can be done in a brief period with a school from very small beginnings. To raise a school from a dozen or more pupils, meeting in that very hall, up to a fourth class school, with over a hundred scholars, and with a fine building of their own, is an achieve ment any teacher might well be proud of, and that Mr. Gollan has accomplished this in so short a time proves conclusively enough that the Education Department of this State holds no more ab...

Send-off to Mr. Calder. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 4 September 1909

Send-off to Mr. Calder. The news that our local bank manager was to be sent to fresh fields caused a feeling of profound regret throughout the whole town, for Mr. Calder bas endeared himself to all, and during his short stay of some twelve months has made many per sonal friends by his sterling character and general courtesy to all. His many friends, therefore, de cided npt to allow him to depart without some mark of their friendship, and to this end about one hundred ladies and gentlemen met at the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening to show their estimation in a practical manner. A large num ber of our prominent business people were on the platform, who attended to express their friendship for Mr. Calder, and their regret at his removal. ? Mr. Crawford read apologies from several promi nent business gentlemen, who were unavoidably prevented from being present, but who expressed the same feelings of friendship and regret at losing so estimable an officer as our bank manager. The follow...

Aunt Honoria's "Project." [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 4 September 1909

Aunt Honoria's 'Project.' Until Clementine came to stay Avith old Aunt Honoria, in Ireland, she could almost have imag ined the world to be bounded by' the narrow sub urb in which she lived. Year in, year out, homeless little Clementine, an orphan since her birth, had been an inmate of the l Misses Wells ' vSelect Boarding-School for Girls. ' Year in, year out, she had watched the other pupils come and go, of girlhood or young womenhood made their claims upon them, envying them a little wistfully as they severally took their departure into the busy bustling world without, which so far was only a name for Clementine. It was when Clementine was in her nineteenth year that Miss Wells died, leaving Miss Jessie, the second Miss Wells, forlornly inadequate to cope with the boarding establishment alone. Miss Jessie — pretty, delicate, and incapable — had throughout her life known no will save that of her elder sis ter. Only on one point had Miss Jes.sie always agreed to differ from her sen...
